Carolina Hurricanes have gained restricted free agent goalkeeper Cayden Primeau Exchange the seventh round of the 2026 NHL draft from the Montreal Canadaens.
Primeau, 25, posted his best single-season record in AHL history with 21-2-2 (.880) in 2024-25 with 21-2-2 (.880) in 26 games in 2024-25, including wins and 11-0-2 straight wins in each of his top 10 decisions to end the regular season. Primeau averaged 1.96 in the league and finished second with a savings percentage of 0.927 and was part of the Harry “Hap” Holmes Memorial Award as the Rockets tied for the fewest goals allowed in the AHL.
Primeau also made 11 appearances with Montreal in 2024-25, with a 2-3-1 savings percentage of 4.70 GAA and .836.
Primeau is a native of Voorhees, NJ, who has played 149 professional AHL games in his six professional seasons, all appearing with Laval, with a 2.60 GAA, a 0.912 saving rate and 13 lockdowns. He also scored a savings percentage of 0.920 in his 24th Calder Cup playoff appearances, helping the Rockets reach the Eastern Conference Finals in 2022 and 2025. He was appointed to the AHL All-Rookie team in 2019-20 and Canada All-Stars in 2020-21.
Primeau was originally the Canadians’ seventh round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft. In 55 professional NHL games, he has a GAA of 13-24-7, with 3.69 GAA, .884 percent savings and two closings.
