Hurricanes use special teams to beat the Devils to lead the series with a 3-1 – Hockey Writer –

The New Jersey Devils and Carolina Hurricanes competed for Game 4 Sunday afternoon in front of a sold-out prudential center crowd. In a very tense game, the Hurricanes’ success on special teams helped them win 5-2. They now bring three series to one. To relieve the injured Frederik Andersen, Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 14 of his 15 (.933%) in his second professional playoff win.

In just 52 seconds, Andrei Svechnikov spins from 47 feet away and shoots innocent shots, the muzzle passing over Markstrom. For the next few minutes, the hurricane continued to put pressure on the demons. It finally seemed they had escaped a long turn, but Stefan Noesen could not carry a lot of open ice hockey in front of him. Dougie Hamilton was fined for intervention in the first late stage. The fine extends to the beginning of the second start, where Svechnikov digs one to make it 3-0. The special team continues to haunt all the Devils series. “We expect ourselves to be better … it’s one thing to make plans, it’s another,” Sheldon Keefe said.

A moment later, Nico Hischier hit 3-1 from Timo Meier’s excellent feed. Then, the crutch matter got weird. Meier opened the crease and collided with Frederik Andersen, who fell immediately and had to leave the game. Officials called the five-minute professional so they could review it properly, which determined that the show was not punished.

Meier did not leave his print in the game as he quickly passed the puck through Kochetkov after the offensive zone draw, bringing it 3-2 back to life. This is where the score stays in the third, as the devil continues to tilt the ice and creates a chance. But with 5:48 going forward, Markstrom let Brent Burns’ shot leak, doubled the lead of the cane to 4-2.

Markstrom then had 3:30 left for the extra attackers, but the devil immediately turned the puck over, and Svechnikov stored the puck in the empty net, completed the hat trick and reached a deal.

The Hurricane will return to home at Lenovo Center on Tuesday to try to end the series. April 29 (7:30 pm ET).
