Even before the 2025 U.S. Open Week began, Oakmont’s long and thick toughness attracted a lot of attention. Defending champion Bryson Dechambeau recorded his shock in the long grass on a visit last week.
At a glance at the thick Oakmont thing, casual observers might think it has been cut for weeks. But on Monday night, a U.S. Open competitor recorded a strange and fascinating sight: a large U.S. army of open maintenance personnel cuts tough states throughout the process.
But nothing seems to be there. This is what you need to know.

After a long round of practice, four-time PGA Tour champion Jhonattan Vegas walked a fascinating scene on the track Monday night. In front of him, a group of at least 20 maintenance personnel, each operating a lawn mower.
The workers all wore matching grey hats, grey shirts and khaki pants, forming a synchronous mowed ballet that carefully cuts every patch of rough areas that need to be trimmed.

However, this scenario is not the pressure of USGA feeling growing complaints. As Las Vegas points out in his post: “Good news, they are cutting the hardships, but still can’t play. Have fun.”
Instead, rough regular mowing is essential to make Oakmont’s rough thickness.
Oakmont’s roughness is so thick for us
But how did U.S. Open and Oakmont maintenance staff get so rough in the first place?
Fortunately, our golf team got the answer to this question from the leaders of Oakmont maintenance staff.
As Oakmont Agronomic Director Max Classen explains in the video below, you can’t just let the short rough grow a few inches and call it a day. If you do this, the roughness becomes long and soft, just like if you make the yard too long between episodes, it’s a bit like.
“In Oakmont [U.S. Open] Champion,” Klasson told Golf. “You have to slowly increase the height of the cut…If you only let the 2.25 inches of roughness grow to 5 inches, the plant will have no structure. It will end and you will have lies and it really won’t be a punishment. At the end of the day, you want the ball to sit in it, which is the real challenge. ”
Make rough long-term growth and Thick, they have to gradually increase the rough height by half an inch at a time.

This explains the mowing procedure captured on Monday night in Vegas. The maintenance staff did not significantly lower the rough height, but instead mowed very little grass. The reason for this is to make roughness more effective, but to make it more difficult.
