Dan Burn said he thinks his chances of playing in England may not come, but is now aiming for a place in the World Cup.
The 32-year-old has had a week-long game, scoring the start of the Newcastle League Cup defeat of Liverpool before joining Thomas Tuchel’s first Engladn team.
Just seven years ago, Burn played in the First League and had seen spells with Darlington, Yeovil and Wigan before entering the Premier League.
“I think I’m ignored, but I understand,” he said.
“The slate was clean when the new manager came in, but once you were past during so many international breaks, you accepted the time, but luckily the new manager brought me the opportunity.
“It might make me very resilient. I don’t think I’ve had a straight line in my career, I really started late and it’s very up and down.
“I made my Premier League debut at the age of 21 and three years later, I was released by Fulham, so I felt it just made me stronger.
“I’ve been skeptical of me in my career. I suspect many people who watch me play in Darlington would say I’d sit here to hold a press conference for England.”
Bourne said his goal is now to secure his position in Tuchel’s World Cup campaign and appear on the biggest stage in football.
He added: “I’m trying to ride the camp at a minute’s camp. I just want to impress and try to do the next camp.
“But obviously, it’s every kid’s dream to go to the World Cup or even play for your country, so know that I have a chance and if I grab it, it’s special.”
