As The Athletic previously reported, the Lakers have been patient in making trades with the goal of leveraging their first-round picks (they can acquire first-round picks in 2029, 2030 and/or 2031, but could trade one of them Two — first-round picks in 2029 and 2031 — at most) are approaching the trade deadline, when they have a better gauge of their roster. But the exception to this approach would be the short-term opportunity to trade Jonas Valanciunas, Cam Johnson and/or Finney Smith, team and league sources revealed earlier this month. The Lakers had interest in Valanciunas as early as this summer. Of course, Brooklyn turned to sellers when it traded Dennis Schroder to the Golden State Warriors on Dec. 15.
