On Friday, May 30, Seattle Cleken announced that they expanded Josh Mahura. The 27-year-old signed a contract with Seattle for another two years with an average annual value (AAV) of $907,500.
Mahura started Anaheim Ducks’ NHL career in the 2018-19 season. In the 2021-22 season, he was with them and participated in 79 games. He scored 6 goals, recorded 14 assists, and scored a total of 20 points.
In the 2022-23 season, the Florida Panthers received a waiver on October 10. He played 82 games with Florida and recorded 16 points with four goals and 12 assists. His Plus/Minus was his best throughout his career, recording 17 points. Mahura entered the 2023-24 season with the Panthers and recorded nine assists. His Plus/Minus took a dive and recorded a negative 2.
In the 2024 offseason, Mahura signed him as a free agent on July 3. He had his third defensive pairing with Ryker Evans. This season was Evans’ first full season in the NHL with Mahura serving as his mentor. In his 64 games, Mahura recorded nine assists and scored five. His average time is 13:45 on ICE (ATOI).
Even though he had spent some time on his third pairing, Mahura added the strong defensive depth Kraken needed. With the first two pairs established with Adam Larsson/Vince Dunn and Brandon Montour/Jamie Oleksiak, it seems unlikely that Mahura will rise in the near future. Interestingly, whether Evans will be his defense partner in the upcoming season, as his contract expires this offseason, will become an unrestricted free agent (UFA) on July 1.
