Plans to upgrade its spa facilities at Luton Hoo Hotel, a luxury venue vying to host the Ryder Cup, have been approved.
The Arora Group, owners of the iconic hotel south of Luton, have previously secured permission to build an additional golf course in the hope of hosting the prestigious American vs. European competition in the future.
The latest plans, including a full application and listed building consent, have been submitted to Central Bedfordshire Council.
They have outlined a major expansion of the spa, located in the former stables building, as well as a series of ambitious upgrades. The council's Development Management Committee unanimously approved the proposals and permission was granted for the listed building.
Hotel upgrade
The comprehensive renovation includes alterations to the historic Adams Building, the construction of a new pavilion, new tennis and cricket courts, and a children's play area within Columnhill Woods.
In addition, the spa renovation is aimed at improving the hotel's service levels in line with its vision to win the Ryder Cup in 2031 or 2035.
Caroline Macrdechian, chief planning officer for central Bedfordshire, described the upgrade as a transformative development for the area, saying: “It will bring the reputation of the Fairmont Hotel to the authority.” However, due to the hotel's green location, Within the band, the plan still needs to be submitted to the Communities Secretary for final approval.

Concerns were raised about heritage conservation and potential tree loss, but this has not stopped the scheme from progressing.
Surinder Arora, founder and chairman of the Arora Group, called the upgrade a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” He revealed that the investment far exceeded initial expectations.
“Initially, we thought we might spend up to £50 million. Our dreams are getting bigger and bigger and we are now looking at investing between £160 million and £170 million, which would create over 350 additional jobs,” he explained.
As part of the redevelopment, the hotel's silted lake and nearby River Lea will also undergo major restoration.
The improvements are designed to transform Luton Hoo into a world-class venue capable of hosting the Ryder Cup and attracting golf enthusiasts from around the world.
