Alejandro Dominguez, president of Conmebol, South American football governing body, formally proposed that the 2030 FIFA World Cup expand to 64 national teams, rather than the 48 national teams currently approved.
The proposal was proposed at the 80th General Assembly held in Conmebol on Thursday, aiming to make the 100th anniversary of the competition a special edition.
The FIFA, which dominates international football, has been aware of the suggestion, which was made by the Uruguayan representative at a virtual FIFA Council meeting in March.
“We firmly believe that the centenary celebration will be unique because it will only be celebrated once every 100 years,” Dominguez said in Congress.
“That’s why we first proposed this anniversary on three continents with 64 teams.
“This will give all countries the experience of having the opportunity to live the world, so no one on the planet is left out of the party.”
The 2030 World Cup will become the widest geographical range ever, with six host countries in three continents.

Uruguay held its first championship in 1930 and is expected to hold a competition as part of the centenary tribute. Other co-hosts include Argentina, Paraguay, Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
By expanding the game, all 10 Comer national countries, including Venezuela, which has not yet been eligible for the World Cup, will likely be secured in the game.
If implemented, the revised format will double the number of matches in the 64-game model used between 1998 and 2022, bringing the total to 128 matches.
Although Conmebol’s proposal has caused excitement, not everyone supports the idea. UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin had previously expressed his concerns, calling the concept of the 64 teams in the World Cup “a bad idea.”
Skeptics argue that this expansion can dilute the level of competition and undermine the importance of the qualification process, especially in areas where traditionally competitive.
