Callaway CB 12 Wedges are designed to add forgiveness to short games

It’s 2025, which means many beginners or mid-to-high obstacles (even some unit players) have adopted the game improvement iron to a large extent. However, most players are still using the same blade wedges as Tour players use.

Game remodels or cavity-backed wedges are often considered taboo, but Callaway believes that there is obviously a market for advanced gaming-remodel wedges, so the company is launching new CB 12 wedges to fill the gap.

1. Forgiveness is the name

The name of CB 12 is derived from the 12 grams peripheral weighting of Callaway. Peripheral weighting is nothing new in golf equipment, as it has always been a big part of golf club design, from the 1970s small persimmon driver and blade to today’s 460 CC Clubheads and today’s cavity-backed hardcore.

But in most cases, peripheral weighting only applies to wedges in a few cases.

The CB 12 wedge not only has a larger cavity, but also further enhances the weighting of the surroundings, which is used to fill the hollow body of the club using Callaway’s aminoalkyl microspheres.

“Creating a rotating position at the CG position, moving the weight into the Topline helps,” said Brian Herr, R&D wedge manager at Callaway.

Peripheral weighting not only enhances spin, but also increases forgiveness, which is as important around the green as it is from 150 yards on the fairway.

“Especially at those speeds, such as gap wedges or sand wedges, it can sometimes be easy to slow down,” said Zack Oakley, senior product manager. “Click a little bit of ‘toey’, and on these types of shots, it helps if you do grab the center or slow down a little bit, and you’ll still get that forgiveness from the weighting on the periphery.”

Also like the game-changing irons, the CB 12 wedge has a larger shape, thicker top line, and slightly higher offset (certainly not a good number) to inspire confidence.

2. Three-hole versatility

While all six lofts offered in CB 12 (50° to 60˚) have 12° or 14° bounce, they all have similar wide three-stage soles.

“Our three holes are really forgiving for players who usually hit a little bit behind the ball,” Hull said. “The sole slides well and easily on the turf, and when the sole slides through the turf, you have a less speed on the ball.”

The three-hole design is more common in custom wedge grinding, allowing designers to bounce at the front of the wedge while increasing trajectory relief, allowing players to manipulate the face despite the only sole. The three-hole design should also allow players to get more forgiveness from the bunker, encouraging clubs to slide through the sand.

3. Work-level rotation

To help increase rotation, Callaway uses the same groove as the player-centric work wedge.

“It’s a tighter groove with a 37° corner, which rotates more around the green,” Hull said. “Any shot from 15 to 50 yards will help create more spin.”

Callaway CB 12 Wedge will be available in retail starting August 18, with steel priced at $179.99 and graphite priced at $189.99.

It will be available with loft/bounce options for 50/12, 52/12, 54/14, 56/14, 58/12 and 60/12, and the stock axis is KBS High Rev 3.0 115, Project X Denali Green 90 Wedge and Women’s UST seat recoil.
