April 12 is a very large date in the history of the National Hockey League. The greatest players in the game are one of the future Hall of Fame members who have all succeeded on this date. The second generation Hall of Famers had a huge day and made a lot of Stanley Cup playoff history. Let’s start our daily trip to relive the best moments since this date.
All assists from Wayne Gretzky
About this date turned Wayne Gretzky into an auxiliary aircraft. On April 12, 1987, Gretzky had a goal and four assists to help the Edmonton Oilers beat the Los Angeles Kings in Game 4 of the Smythe Divisional Semi-Finals. The two teams entered the final stage of the tie 2-2 and scored the goal while the Oilers won 6-3.
Just 365 days later, Gretzky scored again and added four assistants to the Oilers’ playoff win. This time, he did it against the Winnipeg Jets to knock them out of the playoffs. The Oilers went on to win the fourth Stanley Cup in five years, the last of Gretzky’s career.
On April 12, 1991, Gretzky did not score, but he scored four assists in a 7-4 win over the Canucks in Vancouver. The great player becomes the first player to earn 200 playoff assists. He retired at 260 and remains the only player to earn at least 200 playoff assists.
Brett’s Hull for a Day
Gretzky isn’t the only Hall of Fame to hold a lot of numbers on this date. Brett Hull also has some memorable moments. On April 12, 1988, Hull scored his sixth goal in five playoff games and his third game as St. Louis Blues eliminated the Chicago Blackhawks from the playoffs. He scored seven goals and nine points in 10 playoff games in the spring.
On April 12, 1991, Hull competed in one of the craziest Stanley Cup playoff games in recent memory. He scored a pair of goals and added two assists, while Adam Oates scored a hat-trick against the Red Wings 6-1.
Game 5 of the Norris Divisional Semi-finals between these two rivals set an NHL record for most free throws (66) in playoff games, with most free throw minutes in a team (33 per game), most free throw minutes in a game (298) (298) (298) and a team’s maximum PIM (Red Wings: 152).
A year later, Hull scored his 300th professional NHL goal and 500th career, putting the Blues 1-1 against Minnesota Polaris. Gretzky and Mario Lemieux, the only two players in NHL history, scored 300 goals faster than Hull.
Stanley Cup Playoff Memories
On April 12, 1938, the Blackhawks defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1 to win the Stanley Cup. They skated eight American-born players on their way to the second championship in franchise history. It wasn’t until 1961 that the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup again.
Maple Leafs rookie goalkeeper Frank McCool made history on April 12, 1945, as he closed his red wings in the third straight game in the Stanley Cup final. Detroit rushed into the game with five goals in Game 4 and forced Toronto to win three straight games.
Dick Irvin became the first head coach in NHL history to win 100 professional playoff games on April 12, 1955, when the Montreal Canadaens beat the Red Wings 6-3 in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup final. It was his final playoff victory, and he was still just one of four coaches to win the 100-win Plateau in the playoffs. Scotty Bowman (223), Al Arbor (123) and Joel Quenneville (119) are the others.

On April 12, 1979, the Maple Leafs duo set a Stanley Cup playoff record, the three fastest goals for a team. Darryl Sittler hit two goals and Ron Ellis beat Game 2 of the Atlanta season 7-4 in 23 seconds to finish third in Game 2 of their preliminary round.
On April 12, 1987, when the Canadiens swept the Boston Bruins with a 4-2 victory, they won 18Th The playoff series beat their competitors. The Bruins eventually ended the winning streak in the following playoffs, beating the playoff series for the first time since 1946.
Chris Chelios set an NHL record when he won the Red Wings on April 12, 2008. Detroit beats Nashville Predators 4-2 in Game 2 of the Western Conference Semi-Finals to his 248Th Professional playoff career. He broke the playoff record retained by goalkeeper Patrick Roy. His 266 Stanley Cup playoff game remains the most games in NHL history, which is a qualifying for 24 different periods of the playoffs.
Odd number and ending
On April 12, 1991, the San Jose Sharks appointed George Kingston as their first head coach. The news comes six months before the Sharks’ first NHL season begins. Kingston was fired in just two seasons, with the Sharks being fired 28-129–7.
Mark Recchi set a Philadelphia Flyers record on April 12, 1993, and defeated the New York Rangers 1-0 for the 120th point of the season. Recchi breaks Bobby Clarke’s 119 records in 1975-76. He finished the season with 123 points, which remains the best single season in the team’s history.
On April 12, 1994, Mike Modano became the first player in Dallas Stars history to beat Blues 9-5 with 50 goals in a season. Dino Ciccarelli and Brian Bellows both had 50 goals in the season, and the franchise was called Minnesota home, but Modano remains the only 50 goal scorer since moving to Texas.

The original Jets played their final regular season game in Winnipeg on April 12, 1996. Keith Tkachuk became the third player in NHL history, scoring 50 goals in a season and scored an empty goal in a 5-3 win over the Kings. The Jets were popped out of the Stanley Cup playoffs by the Red Wings in six games before moving to Arizona.
Speaking of Red Wings in 1995-96, they beat the Blackhawks with their 61st win of the season. They broke the previous record of 60 wins set by the Canadiens in 1976-77 and tied for the flyer with the most home wins of the 36 season. The Colorado Avalanche ended their grand season in a memorable six Western Conference finals.
On April 12, 2002, goalkeeper Sean Burke set a record for most victories by defeating Minnesota Wild 7-1. Burke broke Nikolai Khabibulin’s 32 points set in 1998-99. His 33 wins remain the fourth largest victory in team history.
In the same game, Teppo Numminen became the first defender in the history of the Coyotes series to earn 400 professional assists. His 426 assistants remain the Blueliners team record and is the fourth of all players in Jets/Coyotes history.
Goalkeeper Anthony Stolarz set the Anaheim Ducks record in a 4-0 victory over the San Jose Sharks on April 12, 2021. He broke the 45 records shared by Jonas Hiller in the 3-0 victory of the Bruins on December 20, 2010, and won 1-0 victory in the Bruins on December 20, 2010, and won 1-0 victory in Dominic roussss, 1-22-year-old Avanche in 1-0 victory in 1-00 victory.

Ultimately, in Calgary, Johnny Gaudreau scored 100 points for the first time in his career, becoming the second-place American-born player in the past 25 years.
On April 12, 2023 Miro Heiskanen passed 73 points in one season through Star/Minnesota Polaris history. His 62 assists also passed Craig Hartsburg, and in one season a defensive player has received most assists in Stars history.
Jason Robertson’s 109 points also set a new record in the season of 23 or under among American-born players and has a second in a season as Bobby Smith in team history.
Meanwhile, in Calgary, Nikita Zadorov scored a natural hat-trick in the Flames’ 3-1 victory over the Sharks, becoming the only second-place defender in the franchise history. Dustin Wolf also made his NHL debut and became the fourth-largest goalkeeper for Trevor Kidd, Pat Riggin and Dan Bouchard when he won his first victory in the Flames/Atlanta Flames history.
On April 12, 2024, Filip Forsberg scored his 44th goal of the season and passed Matt Duchene (43 in 2021-22), the only one with the most in the Predators’ history sport. He also became the second player to score 90 points in a season, joining Roma Josie (2021-22, 2021-22), and the fifth Swedish-born player in NHL history, scoring 45 goals in a season, joining Kent Nilsson (two times; last: 46:46, 1982-83), Markus Naslund (Markus Naslund (48), Markus Naslund (2002–03), Mats Sunn and Mats Sund Sund, Sund in ka Haban sund in ka Haban in kah sund in kah ind ind ind ind of sund, 47. (1987 – 88 years old).
