Crystal Palace striker receives 25 needles to severe ear tear, but all scans are clear
Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta was discharged from hospital after a horrible collision in a FA Cup clash with Millwall on Saturday.
After the incident, the French striker received 25 needles at St. George’s Hospital and had a “severe crack” at St. George’s Hospital, which occurred during the Palace’s 3-1 victory.
The palace confirmed Mateta’s discharge in a statement Saturday night, explaining: “All scans are clear and JP feels good.”
The club added that Mateta “will now take a break and resume work in the next few days, where our club doctors will monitor his progress.”
Mateta was injured in a collision with Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts, who needed oxygen therapy on the court before being transferred to the hospital.
After the incident, the palace forward reassured Instagram and wrote: “Thank you for the friendly message. I did a great job. I hope to be back soon. More powerful than ever. Good-doing people have a great job today. I love you. JP.”
Hawks manager Oliver Glasner talked about the incident after the game and despite the victory, he expressed concern.
“He was conscious, he was in the hospital. His ears looked terrible. It was a very serious injury, so we hope everything went well for him,” Glasner said.
“We’re not really happy, we can’t be really happy. Of course, it’s a huge win, going to the quarterfinals, but when you lose a player, especially with a foul like this, there are two different feelings in your stomach.”
The Palace owner described the incident as “terrible” but added: “I’m sure the goalkeeper didn’t want to hurt JP in this situation, and no player wanted this.”
Steve Parish, chairman of Crystal Palace, appreciated a stronger view, which was said to be the “worst challenge” he has ever seen, even suggesting that Matita could have been killed.
The Hawks won the FA Cup quarterfinals by defeating Millwall 3-1, but he may not have a striker in the Premier League match against Ipswich next Saturday.
Palace thanks “Selhurst Park and Hospital’s medical staff for their help and professionalism” and those who sent supportive messages to Mateta and the club.
