Toronto Maple Leafs have signed restricted free agent Matthew Knies as a six-year, $46.5 million extension, which is $7.75 million in average annual value (AAV).

This was a few days before opening on July 1, 2025, which led Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving to other teams that needed it.
Knies’ expansion is ideal for price
Somewhat hesitates, Maple Leaf will give the tool for how they deal with core members. However, Treliving showed through this deal that he was able to obtain the tool at an ideal price. Last season, he scored 29 goals and 29 assists in his career and scored 58 points in 78 games. In the playoffs, despite being injured against the Florida Panthers, he had five goals and seven assists in 13 games, with 12 points.
Knies, 20, drafted in the second round of the 2021 NHL draft and earned $925,000 AAV from his entry-level contract, will now be significantly added. Maple Leaf’s salary cap space is now estimated at $13.7 million. But with the salary cap for the next season and the potential departure of Mitch Marner, they have more room to keep the bargaining of the deal.
