Maria Jose Marin has some companies in this game, but her clutch match never gives anyone a chance to be too close.
Arkansas sophomore won the DI individual championship Monday at the North course at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa and ended the NCAA Women’s Golf Championship with a 69 stroke to become the third Razorback to receive personal honors. She joined Maria Fassi (2019) and Stacy Lewis (2007).
“My emotions are mixed together, and the strongest thing is that I’m very happy right now,” Jose Marin told reporters. “I believe in the game of every shot. I know I have the ability to play a huge round, and it does.”
Jose Marin shot 70 and 72 in the first two rounds, but she led the way with a low bogey of 65 on Sunday. This gave her a 54-hole lead, with her final round with UC Catherine Park and Florida Mirabel Ting, both starting on her third day.
But Jose Marin fired. She made birdies on the opening hole on Monday and handed over the birds below three. Her only bogey went into 13-13, but she ended her round with a birdie on a 5-five card.
Ting is the second-ranked amateur in the world, starting slowly but ending in under 31 shots in the last nine and finishing second in solo.
Jose Marin took the clubhouse lead to 12 and had to wait for it to see if anyone would catch her. Stanford’s Kelly Xu shot because she was under 11 (and then lagging behind 11), but she chuckled 12th place and scored doubles at 16, scoring 71 and finished third.
This is Jose Marin’s third victory this year, and he ranks tenth. Last year, she also won the stroke section of American women amateurs and was promoted to the semifinals before having to quit due to injury.
Monday’s victory also earned her another start – she is now exempted from the U.S. Women’s Open next week at Erin Hills, Wisconsin.
