Ranking
One of the most attractive prospects in the 2025 NHL draft, Mason West is a strange case. The Minnesota native not only played hockey at a high level, but also played the quarterback at Edina High School and attracted the attention of college football. He decided he would focus on hockey and be fully committed to hockey and have good reason to do so, as he has a toolbox that would make the NHL organization more than happy to have in its system. After playing high school hockey with Edina for most of the season, West did jump to the USHL with Fargo Force.
The first thing about the West is his figure. At 6-foot-6, many people would think he is very big, but he hasn’t used his body to his advantage. Instead, he uses his vision, good expectations and skating ability to make games on both sides of the hockey. Defensively, he uses his vision and expectations to put himself in the driveway passing and is strong on the back check. He did show an willingness to form an opponent with the board to gain hockey control, but the biggest downfall in his defensive game was his consistency. Sometimes his engagement time is lacking, he is caught and watching the hockey.

In terms of hockey offense, West is more of a playmaker at this stage of his development, although he does have a strong shooting percentage. He used a larger framework in the skating department to play to his strengths, with a long-term strong pace gradually growing along the ice to increase the speed of the transition. His vision was shown while in the offensive zone, as he seemed to be scanning and looking for the next game that he could make very quickly. The biggest knock on the door with his offensive game is that his decisions on hockey may sometimes be inconsistent, but given his original talent, it is expected. Overall, West has the tools the NHL organization is looking for and is a player who can easily grow and improve the game.

quotation marks
“Not only is he big, he can be healthy and smart with hockey … He made a great decision. He investigated a lot like the quarterback he was there. You can really see that. So it makes him very interesting.” – David Gregory, deputy director of NHL Central Scouting
“The West is a huge forward with a strong hockey IQ and unexpectedly skating. In the offensive zone, he stays away from the hockey, which is not always consistent. Sometimes he can watch the shackles of the hockey through the hockey, but he can also get support and within the round trip, and is also interested. It’s not just a smaller forward can.” – FC Hockey Kyle Pereira
