Matteo Berrettini has been named the 2024 ATP Comeback Player of the Year after returning from a six-month layoff and winning three tour-level trophies this season. The Italian's peers selected him for the honor after he climbed back into the top 40 from No. 154 in the PIF ATP Rankings.
“I am very happy to win the Comeback Player of the Year award,” Berrettini said in a message to fans. “Thank you so much for your support. It's been a great season and a great effort for me and my team. Obviously I'm really happy with the results we've achieved and I can't wait to step on the pitch in 2025 to Get more success.
“Thank you again for your support. This wouldn't be possible without you, the fans.”

After an injury-plagued 2023 season that ended with a ruptured ankle ligament at the U.S. Open, Berrettini plans to return with new coach Francesco Roig at the 2024 Australian Open. But on the eve of his first Grand Slam match in Melbourne, he was forced to withdraw with a new foot injury.
He finally returned to competition in March, reaching the final at the ATP Challenger Tour in Phoenix, his first tournament back. After losing to Andy Murray in Miami in three sets, Berrettini re-announced himself on the ATP Tour by winning the ATP 250 event in Marrakesh.
The Italian's progress was again slowed by illness but he bounced back from a two-month hiatus and reached the Stuttgart final in his first game back in June. In July, he won ten consecutive games in Gstaad and Kitzbühel. His three clay-court titles this season bring his tour-level trophies to 10.
“When you can't do your job and what you love to do, then it's always a struggle. So I'm really grateful for every moment that I get to spend on the court, performing and doing the best that I can,” he told Media coverage of the Rolex Shanghai Masters. “I know it's a process. I've done a good job this year and improved my ranking again and I feel good.”
Berrettini finished the season with a 32-12 record and helped Italy defend its Davis Cup title, scoring crucial wins in the final two singles rounds.
Marin Cilic and Kei Nishikori are also nominated for the Comeback Player of the Year at the 2024 ATP Awards. Nominees are voted on by the International Tennis Writers Association (ITWA) and the winner is chosen by the players on the shortlist.
