Mayweather: Fury 'didn't take enough risks' in Usyk loss

Jeff Mayweather says he thinks Tyson Fury narrowly won their rematch against Oxandr Usyk in Riyadh on Saturday night. He thinks Fury (34 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss, 24 KOs) will do better than unified heavyweight champion Usyk (23 wins, 0 losses, 12 KOs) in this 12-round fight.

Jeff didn't think it was an exciting fight and labeled it “mediocre.” Usyk won by unanimous decision with scores of 116-112, 116-112, 116-112 in 12 rounds. Fury gave up his chance to win by doing nothing in the title match while the fight was still up for grabs.

Weight and performance

Fury's added weight slowed him down, making it difficult for him to put in as much effort as he could to win. He looked flabby at 262 pounds in the first fight, but moved up to 281 pounds in the rematch.

Fury was so chunky that he had to pull his pants up to minimize his midriff, leaving a smaller target area for Usyk's punches.

“The fight is very close. It could have happened either way, but I'm leaning slightly towards Tyson,” Jeff Mayweather said on his YouTube channel, which he believes Tyson Fury won last Saturday night. Unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.

“Every other round, he [Usyk] Will do well, but not as well as Tyson. Usyk is taking over the heavyweight division. They were both defeated by Usyk. So, probably not.

If Turki Ararachih wants to set up a trilogy between Fury and Usyk, he can do it. Fans won’t want to see that. With Fury suffering two losses, Turki's fight with Anthony Joshua is not a good time. Fury needs a win or two against serious contenders to redeem himself and increase his stock price.

Turki should tell Fury that if he wants to get his retirement payday against Joshua, he needs to get it through fights with Daniel Dubois and Martin Bakool. Let him go through the fire before he can get a huge payday.

Fury's caution

It's not going to end well for Fury, Joshua or Dubois against a top-tier Lewis, Foreman or Mike Tyson. It would be interesting if there was a way to teleport them back to when these guys were younger, but none of them would hold up well against those types of fighters. Fury will be the most vulnerable of the three as he can't punch and his moves or attacks won't work.

“I don't think so,” Mayweather said of whether Fury can be considered an all-time great. “Some people might think so. I really like Tyson Fury and I think he's very talented for his size. But if you get beat twice by a lightweight, you can't say too much Much more. I think he is. [Fury] Hall of Fame member.

Fury is definitely not a Hall of Famer and certainly not the greatest player of all time. He has not beaten anyone other than Wladimir Klitschko and Deontay Wilder who are both in their 40s. We saw his impressive performance in recent losses to Joseph Parker and Zhang Zhilei. Those defeats took the shine off Fury's efforts to win the fight with Deontay.
