With emotional disappointment in the end of another stomach-agonizing pain in the Edmonton Oilers season, organizations and players will return to business. Everyone’s eyes turned to Connor McDavid – not only to solve the answer to the loss, but to be clear about his future.

After the Stanley Cup final, McDavid spoke to reporters during the playoff media supply, revealing, even uneasy, commenting on the future and how contract negotiations will be conducted. If nothing else, his remarks should turn to the front desk, and they might think his delay was a slam dunk deal.

First of all, McDavid wants to win

McDavid’s first message is clear: he still believes in this oil worker core. “This core has been together for a long time and we’ve been building this moment,” McDavid said, noting that having unfinished businesses, the feeling of being heartbreaking and disappointing when everything comes together is worthy of heartbreak and disappointment. “We fixed it together and tried to put it on the finish line.”

These words will surely hang in the minds of the front desk staff of the organization. This is not a team that should be as close to off-season as the form of signing McDavid. He should put them into practice to ensure management does not take an easy approach to improvement. McDavid didn’t slam the gate living in Edmonton, but he was obviously not ready to commit it. The team should know this and prove to him that they will stop with nothing to build a roster he thinks is enough to overcome a lineup like Florida.

The Oilers ended painfully in 2023-24, but took a step back in 2024-25. “I would say last year was heartbroken,” McDavid said. “You know, like you’re sad. I said this year is more angry than heartbroken.”

Anger may be a powerful motivation, but it may also be a problem if McDavid is angry that the Oiler hasn’t done anything necessary to improve. There is no doubt that this is a good team. How good is it? McDavid needs to be sure he is better than anyone else and he may not feel it after the team is easily beaten in the finals.

“Keep patience and keep faith,” he said in a message to the Oil Country. The front desk work for the Oilers next year is to make sure McDavid’s patience is not tested unnecessarily.
