There was rain at the Moorefield Village Golf Club on Friday but scored lower.
Through two rounds, the Memorial Championship has been one of the most difficult games on the PGA Tour so far this season. In its seventh autograph match of the year, there were only 13 players in the 72-man game Thursday. There are only 11 players entering the weekend.
Speaking of weekends, 57 players will improve after layoffs due to Germany’s Matti Schmid. Schmid missed a birdie putt within four feet of the 17th hole to keep the game five points. Unfortunately for him, Schmid continued to miss the weekend’s shot for his last hole.
This week, Ben Griffin stood out last week in the Charles Schwab Challenge. Griffin launched an incredible 65 rounds, setting the pace on Thursday before averaging the cards on Friday. Also on the Under-Seven rankings is five-time Tour champion Nick Taylor, the only player to record two rounds this week in the 1960s.
Akshay Bhatia shot two shots in five shots under PAR. In two consecutive rounds, defending champion and pre-match favorite (+280) Scottie Scheffler was four points later. Shane Lowry, Sam Burns and Jordan Spieth all finished below thirds with threes. Russell Henley, Xander Schauffele, Tom Hoge and Collin Morikawa ranked in the top 10 below twice.
While the moisture does soften the golf course a little bit, it certainly doesn’t make it easier. The forecast does not require further rainfall over the weekend, but winds are expected to rise to the 10-20 mph range on Saturday.

Akshay Bhatia (11-1)
Batia is one of the best putts in the world, but has so far been very average in the first two rounds, ranking 36th in the field. Everything else is good. He ranked first in driving accuracy, second in SG: Admission, third in the competition, and second in SG: Tee to Green. I have to believe his putting will improve and he will have a great chance of winning his third game on the tour.
Shane Lowry (18-1)
Like Batia, Lowry’s ball hits are top notch. With 36 action holes, Lowry ranked fifth in the field for SG: Admissions, while in the regulations, the Greens ranked No. 1. He is third in SG: Tee to Green, but SG is 46th. If the Irishman could put the putter into lukewarm, he could have the second biggest win in Ohio.
Jordan Spieth top five (+170)
We wrote about Spieth earlier this week, one of our championships to win. He may still do that, but I like the current Lowry price to win more than I can on Spieth. Let’s give ourselves a little swing space and play him to finish the top five. Spieth did a great job on the tee, ranking second in SG: Off Tee. He ranks seventh in the Green Party’s regulation, SG: approaching 12th. However, he is 33rd in SG: Putters and 35th. As I said earlier this week, if the short game appears on Spieth, he will be a serious contender.

Nick Taylor (+600)
Taylor was very solid in the first two days of this game, but I was worried about putting on. Currently, he ranks second in SG: in the same category, he hardly puts the top 100. Griffin also rode a very hot putt because his iron performance wasn’t as good as Taylor, but with Griffin, I wonder if this guy is just on the heater right now and trying to step in front of him might be a bad idea. In five visits to the memorial, Taylor never completed more than 27, with only two rounds of the 1960s before this week.
