Newcastle “expects” to qualify for Champions League

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said his expectations for the club are expected to return to the Champions League.

Newcastle hosts Chelsea on Sunday, with the club locking in scoring and goal difference. Howe’s team is currently leading the goal, both of which have played six games with Arsenal, Manchester City, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa to finish the top five.

Howe’s team played in the 2023-24 Champions League for the first time in 20 years and won the Calaba Cup this year.

“Of course, we will definitely feel expectant internally to try to provide Champions League football.

“It’s the expectation we put ourselves on ourselves.

“I think winning the Cup final gives us freedom and newfound confidence, which makes us bounce over the next few games. We will improve our performance.

“But from football it feels like it was a long time ago and now we still have to use and accept that confidence, but now we have to focus on the last three games, for me, how the team is doing. We have to set our expectations as a very high self.”

Howe said his team will have to play with them at Wembley to make the conference league finalist better for Enzo Maresca.

The 47-year-old, who was suspicious of two players who were not named, said: “Yes, I think we have to get close to this performance to win.

“Chelsea had one of the toughest games of the season at Stamford Bridge earlier this season. I think they are great and I think they have started recapturing that in recent games.

“Enzo is a very, very good manager. He’s very smart about the style of playing he has and their offensive players are excellent and if we’re not right they can hurt us, so we need to be prepared, our game plan needs to be good, our players need to be at their best.”

Meanwhile, the club announced that it would conduct a fan consultation campaign on a proposal to update the club’s crest (used since 1988) to align it with the digital age.
