In this edition of Calgary Fire News and Rumors, we waited for an update, Connor Zary appears to have suffered a serious knee injury with Dallas Stars Thursday night. Meanwhile, Joel Farabee was dissatisfied with the host after the controversial no-goal call last night. In other news, Mikael Backlund returns to the roster after missing six games. Last but not least, we have some updates to the Scotia outline.
Zary is injured again
It’s a tough 2024-25 season for Zary. The 23-year-old suffered a heavy knee injury in January, and the Anaheim Ducks seemed to be over at that time. Thankfully, he’s back to the roster much faster than anyone expected, but his time may be short.
Zary appeared to be injured after a collision with star forward Mikko Rantanen last night. Head coach Ryan Huska mentioned after the game that although he didn’t update, he hoped it wouldn’t be as serious as watching those who watched it. TSN’s Darren Dreger made another seemingly positive update this morning, although he admitted that the final prognosis has not been determined yet.

Farabi is frustrated with the referee

The flame lost 5-2, which included an empty net. It was a tough loss for a team struggling to keep pace in the Seanob rankings, a sudden surge in St. Louis Blues.
Bounce back to lineup
The flames took a huge blow two weeks ago when Backlund was forced to quit the game with the Vancouver Canucks being forced to quit due to an upper body injury. The 36-year-old has been a global stable seat in the Flames in 2024-25, scoring 11 goals and 24 points in 65 games.
Backlund was able to return to the roster last night after playing six games in the biggest game of the season. He looked healthy, returned to his usual self, recorded 17:07 minutes of ice time, and shot five shots online. Getting him back to the last game of the regular season should be a major boost to the team.
New arena updates available
There is a lot of time before the Scotia Place opens, but according to many updates, the new facility is worth the wait. The rink is scheduled to open before the 2027-28 season and will include many upgrades to Saddledome, which will make the in-game viewing experience an exciting for fans.
Sportsnet’s Eric Francis recently revealed that the facility will have soft restrooms – this will have three types of restrooms: men, women and part will separate – when the crowd is the main male, they will act as male restrooms, and when the facility is expected to fill more women, they will act as female restrooms. This would be a huge help to avoid overcrowding in the halls and result in less lines during the middle and/or during concert breaks.

Francis also revealed that the stadium will have two concourses, one on the ground, and fans enter the building. This alone makes for a huge upgrade to Saddledome, with single and narrow meetings overcrowded in a large number of events.
Looking forward to the flame
The flames are 6 points less than the Universal Cards, even though they have six games on hand. They hope to finish their week with a few points tomorrow night in an Alberta outing against the Edmonton Oilers. They will be back next week with Colorado Avalanche, Utah Hockey Club, the Anaheim Ducks and the Vegas Golden Knights.
