“They just keep calm” – Slots cheer players as Liverpool expands their lead at Premier League summit

Arne Slot praised the calm his players showed and extended the lead to 13 points after Liverpool expanded its lead to what we called a “spiritual challenge” in the Premier League.

Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister scored goals to beat Newcastle for Slot’s side, who struggled with forward Alexander Isak.

Arsenal’s goalless deadlock against Nottingham Forest means the Reds will expand their lead by two points, with ten games remaining.

The Liverpool boss watched the game from the stands after receiving a red card in a full-time whistle in a 2-2 draw with Everton.

Although he saw the improvement area, Slot was happy with the players’ performance.

“Perhaps because this is our fifth game in 15 days and I’ve seen a few games where we struggled on the ball,” Slot admitted.

“But the rate of work for players after so many games is incredible. Not only from those that start, but from those too.

“So it’s not only a very good team performance, but a great lineup performance.”

The Dutch manager is also keen to highlight how he believes his players have dealt with the increasing pressure brought by league leaders for so long.

“After Everton, after Villa and Wolves’ game, people started to doubt our game,” Slot said. “But we reacted very well to the city and suddenly, everyone became so positive again.

“Despite all the spiritual challenges we face, the players have been calm and did what they have to do, which has brought another team to the point of being as good as possible against us.

“Most of the time our quality makes a difference.”

The Liverpool boss declined to discuss discussions about improving the title, insisting that “there is still a long way to go” and that his team “does not focus on the long term”.

But the slot machine quickly praised Szoboszlai’s work, adding that Hungary “runs for two players”.

“It’s more than goals. But it’s nice that he started scoring because, in the end, it’s what an offensive midfielder in a Liverpool shirt needs to do.”
