Kate Pettersen: “Dave, I wouldn't be surprised if we were ahead in Vancouver today because there's been a lot of talk over the past few weeks. Specifically, in terms of trade talks, names like JT Miller and Elias Pettersson has appeared.

But that’s if we don’t see some kind of blockbuster trade happen in the next few weeks. What other initiatives have you heard Vancouver might be considering?

NHL Rumors: What might the Philadelphia Flyers be considering?

Pagnotta: “Yeah, it would be hard for them to make a deal of this size involving Elias Pettersson or JT Miller mid-season. Not impossible, but difficult. On either side of the front line Any player dealing with such a level will encounter many obstacles.

So as they continue to lead these discussions, some teams will continue to explore. Buffalo mixed together. Minnesota. The Rangers are apparently linked to JT Miller. Detroit. Same goes for other teams.

As they continue to navigate these waters, they are also having other discussions with other teams about other potential moves. We all know, and it's no secret, they want to bring in a top-four defender. Even with Filip Hronek out after his return, they still hope to bring in a top-four defender.

They'd also like to bring in a mid-six offensive weapon to add to their mix if they can. The salary cap is definitely a factor now. Obviously, they have to figure out what types of assets they want to move in and out of. But that was something else they were discussing.

Now, going back to Petey and JT Miller, you know, a trade of this size is going to be difficult. You know what you're talking about. There's been a lot of discussion about the fit of Dylan Cozens and Bowen Byram. I think if you think about defensive players, Vancouver might prioritize Owen Power over Bowen Byram.

NHL Rumors: Vancouver Canucks, New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Extensions

But these are big deals that have to be built. I say again, there's no guarantee that this will happen, and there's no guarantee that it won't happen, but if they get to this point in Vancouver's front office, it's going to be a big hurdle for them to climb.
