Jake Debrusk had 18 seconds left in overtime, while the Vancouver Canucks beat the San Jose Sharks 2-1 to win the third game in four games. Canucks goalkeeper Nikita Tolopilo made his NHL debut with 15 saves to earn his first career victory.
Game review
While the Canucks scored most of the first-period scoring opportunities and beat the Sharks 12-3, both teams scored within 20 minutes of the opening game. During this period, each team received a strong match. Vancouver’s free throw kills blocked the Sharks’ chances, while San Jose goalkeeper Alexandar Georgiev saved all eight shots he faced to prevent Ganakes from making double-small penalty shots against British Columbia native Luca Cagnoni.
The Sharks finally opened up the scoring in another powerful game early in the second phase. Growing Canucks fan Macklin Celebrini found open space in the right circle, bringing the puck to a position, tearing the puck apart the 25th goal of the season, the most hand-player of rookies so far in 2024-25.
After stretching back and forth, neither team had any important views on the net, and both teams were given a strong opportunity but failed to capitalize. The Canucks’ best chance is actually in the free throw kill, getting a variety of high-quality short phone chances, but Georgiev kept the Sharks ahead with an aggressive goalkeeper as the period ended.
Not surprisingly, the Canucks in the third inning increased the pressure, thanks in part to the other two abilities. Although they didn’t score on either, they maintained control of the action after the second game, less than a minute later when a slow puck confused Georgiev made Linus Karlsson hit the net and hit the goal for the remaining nine minutes.

Both teams have some nice looks for the rest of the time, especially Vancouver. But Georgiev recovered from allowing the target to do more fuel savings, and most notably, Teddy Blueger’s chances prevented the opportunity to disconnect. Despite the continued regional pressure on the Karnaks and their six goals during this period, they were unable to score and the game was also overtime.
The extra period was the same, with Vancouver dominating the frame and beating the Sharks 8-1. San Jose made the first shot in overtime, but the Canucks had almost the hockey for the next four minutes. They shot a gun and after Georgiev made several saves, they broke in the last few seconds. Brock Boeser’s shot was barely missed, bounced from the back board and landed on the side of the net, Debrusk beat William Eklund to control the puck and defeated Georgiev through five holes to win, ruining his 35 racing nights. With a minor assist, Quinn Hughes reached 409 career points, tying Alex Edler to the rankings in Canucks history.
The Canucks, who were eliminated from the playoff competition, rose to 90 points last Wednesday (April 9), while the Sharks now have 52 points. The two teams ended their season at home this Wednesday (April 16). The Sharks face the Edmonton Oilers while the Canucks ride the Golden Knights in Vegas.
