Patrick Reed talked about what it means to him to play this year’s Ryder Cup team at this year’s Bethpage Black before his LIV golf tournament at the Marido Golf Club in Carrollton, Texas this week.
“Whenever I represent our country, it means a lot to me,” he said. “For me personally, I’ve been thinking about trying to form every team. Obviously, being part of LIV, we didn’t get points, it was an uphill battle, but in reality, for me, it’s focused on playing some great golf and having the chance.”
Although Reed won’t get any Ryder Cup points in Sunday’s LIV Golf win, his performance could be in his mind as his 67 (-5) starts well enough to share a first-round lead with 4aces GC teammate Harold Varner III. Right behind them: Jon Rahm (-4) and Abe Ancer (-3).
Reed, who scored nine PGA Tour victories between 2013 and 2021, scored a 7-3-2 record in three games with a 7-3-2 career Ryder Cup record. He hasn’t won the LIV Golf Championship since joining the league in 2022. Sunday’s victory will also win for the first time in his Texas since his junior year golfing era.
“Obviously, winning in your hometown means a lot,” Reed said on Friday. “But, honestly, it doesn’t matter. Winning a golf tournament is winning a golf tournament. The feeling of adrenaline and standing on the stage and holding up the trophy is a great feeling. It’s a great feeling. It doesn’t matter.
Reed’s round consists of five birdies and one eagle, while Varner’s five birdies.
“It’s great to finally see Harold score from the round that I think he was supposed to be,” Reed said. “I played a lot with him this year, and he went out and you sat there and you started scratching your head, like how you shot because he hit the ball and only a few putts were wandering around, burning the edges instead of going in. Today I was able to see some putts on putts and a year of competition, and he was able to compete like he did. Years.”
Reed and Varner’s 4aces GC, captained by Dustin Johnson, Bryson Dechambeau’s crusher team led by six shots after the 1st round.
