He will always remember at the end of an otherwise memorable start to the 2025 Tony Finau at Oakmont. Not because it saved his round (no), but because a series of wild events involve arbitrary shots, sprinkler heads, stands and a sleeping fan.

He double bogeyed on the second hole of the day and finished the first nine before the three ended. Thanks to a triple A 10, Finau sat six in the 17-shot match.
He will finish par at 18 with sixes. By the end of the day, it gave him 10 goals from first round leader JJ Spaun.
But, a quick look at his scorecard, the weird way he got at 18 can never be revealed.

Finau’s crazy bounce sprinkles water to fans
There is a solid driver on the fixed hole, from Finau, with a distance of more than 200 yards to reach green. Finau pulled a long iron and was ready to hit his shot from the right side of the fairway, hoping to set up a birdie to end the day with a positive momentum.
It was the time for hay.
Finau’s approach shot passed through the hole, only missing the green rear left edge. But something else happened, not thundering towards the short grass, or falling into thick rough places, but something else happened.

His ball hits his right hand on the top of the green sprinkler’s head. From there, it bounced into the stands behind the green, where it almost nailed an unsuspecting fan.
“Unsuspected” may be an understatement. The current audience fell into life as Finau’s shot bent into a barrier next to his head. In the show-by-play booth, Notah Begay III and Smylie Kaufman speculated that fans might have been sleeping all the time and shots rudely awakened him.
“Wow, that guy is taking a nap! Smylie, that guy is taking a nap.” Baiga said at the booth. “Wake up.”
“Well, he won’t take a nap anymore, Tona, I’ll tell you.”
Now that the fan officially woke up, he went to grab the ball, inciting the shout of “Don’t touch it!” By the announcer. But then he realized his mistake, retreated and raised his hand. View below.
