One of my favorite things to work with Ping is to test on ping proven ground in Phoenix and fit into the Magic Club. It’s not just a test facility; it’s a golf nerd’s dream. You are shooting with the latest gear on the real turf and standing with the club you already trust. You are working with fitters who help develop products and understand them at different levels. Every fit I did there felt like a masterclass.

In this test, I brought the gamer I230 to compare directly with the new I240S. Seeing Ping find new gear for her beloved I series, it doesn’t require a few swings. Higher releases. More spins. Better sound. Closer dispersion. Most importantly, more consistency is more comprehensive. This is the performance difference you can feel and adapt to. When data is withdrawn from what your hand tells you, that’s when you know the club is special.

That’s what makes this work interesting. When I see something like the I240, I know it will help many different players, whether they come from the I210, I230, or even the compact blade, which makes me happy to have this iron in front of more golfers.

It looks like a blade. Like a game-changing gameplay.

At the address, the I240 immediately reminded me of the I210, a long-term favorite among Ping employee Viktor Hovland and Ping employee professionals. The top line is clean and compact, with a small offset, and the overall shape is the iron of the classic Ping player. But there are also modern advantages. There is a visible technique in the cavity, but it is not distracting. Instead, it keeps the club quiet and confident. Smooth Hydropearl 2.0 finishes and cleaning cables enhance the look without overcomplicating the look.

Under the hood: What makes the I240 check?

Ping called it the iron of the real hollow defender player, who determined that balance between precision and forgiveness. The badge inside the cavity is lighter than the I230 by 8.5 grams, which allows Ping engineers to transfer weight and reposition the CG on the head. That’s the big reason why I see higher launches and more consistent rotation numbers.

Even with a lower boot, lower unit digital player, I was surprised by the new I240’s toy. It’s equally impressive: they never felt like they were “helping” too much. The iron still lets me shape the shooting and control trajectory, but in unfortunate circumstances, forgiveness immediately stands out.

One thing I keep coming back to compared to my I230 is the consistency of ball speed and lower range dispersion. This is what really makes oneself unique. Yes, it’s more forgiving, but the consistency of shooting is to build confidence that you can give it a little bit when needed.

Interact with the turf? Better than I expected. Smoother, cleaner, and less than the I230. The redesigned sole is rounded with lead edges and plenty of playable bounces, just slide over the turf.

Built with the best idea

Ping works closely with their travelers to call them. They updated their faces with wider grooves to get better players off the court, which is specifically requested by Tour players. I don’t complain either. More spins? Yes, please.

This collaboration is paying off. More I240 sets appear every week, and these sets appear every week, and these sets are talked about a lot. This is the iron of the player and there is no sacrifice of forgiveness. For those who still want control and feasibility without giving up forgiveness and launch? This is a dream combination.

Who is it

If you’ve been playing I210 or I230, then this is a natural development in your ping journey and a major upgrade. Whether you’re a unit obstacle or a consistent ball shooter looking for more help and more consistency, the I240 should be on your radar.

They are also ideal for players who love the look and feel of the blade, but appreciate the perimeter-weighted “help” and are more forgiving in eccentric clicks. That’s where I see new value. When someone who naturally fires low water and spins it low, I’m impressed with how the I240 makes my height and spin without sacrificing the speed or feeling of the ball. Often, to get this help, you have to give up something (appearance, workability, or consistency). Not here. The I240 keeps my ball speed very consistent across the face and makes my drop speed tighter than I see on the I230.

That’s what made me excited as an fitter with the I240. This is a rare iron that can fit into all kinds of bags. Powerful ball shooters will appreciate the feeling, accuracy and turf interaction. However, a player who is a little inconsistent or needs help doesn’t feel like he’s over-matched or abandons forgiveness. This is a versatile tool, and versatility is gold when you are suitable for golfers of all skill levels.

The final thought

Ping set out to improve the player’s forgiveness with the game, they are absolutely nailed. The I240 is the best iron I’ve hit from Ping. Appearance, sound, feeling, performance – It checks all my “must have” boxes as gear nerds.

If you’re on the fence, hit them. I bet you will have the same reaction after your first swing: “Let’s keep building one.”
