The key to success of mud balls is to minimize the time the ball is in the air, because mud can create a lot of perfect uncertainty.
Fortunately, on the lens around the green, you have some options. If you don’t have anything to carry around in front of you, go with a lower loft club and hit the trusty bump to minimize air time. If you do need to carry the ball on the obstacle, don’t forget to release your hands to add some lofts to the club when it hits.

Technology is more critical on lenses within 100 yards, as you need to generate consistent trajectories to control distances.
A good exercise I’ve used with some senior players is to take three balls and hit them from various yardage numbers. Start with 20 yards and then move back 5 yards until you reach 50 yards. Simply draw the distance control and then view the distance of the ball from each position.
