With the announcement that the Pro Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) will expand to the West Coast among teams in Vancouver and Seattle, some questions have been raised about how the league will make its expansion draft. On May 19, PWHL announced how to make an extension draft.
Each of the first six teams must give up four players, so the two teams participating in the expansion draft, Vancouver and Seattle, have 12 players, and then all eight teams will be in the PWHL draft on June 24.
While each team has to release four players from the roster, they can save three players before the expansion draft begins. All teams must submit three players by noon on June 3. The next day, June 4, an exclusive signature window will be opened for Vancouver and Seattle. Both teams can sign up to five players on any of the top six teams. Once the first six teams release two players to either of the two teams, they are allowed to save another player, with up to four protected players. The official expansion draft will take place five days after June 9. Here, Seattle and Vancouver will alternate players until each team has 12 players. If one of the two upcoming teams does not sign five players within five days before the expansion draft, they will be allowed to pick more players until they reach the highest score of 12 players.
The 2025 extension draft will ensure that all teams in the PWHL are competitive and balanced. All players in the PWHL show extraordinary skills and talent. With the expansion draft, both PWHL Vancouver and PWHL Seattle will be in good shape once the 2025-26 season begins.
