Rangers should see what they can get in the Othmann & Schneider deal – Hockey Writer – New York Rangers

Throughout the NHL, you need to give up something in order to get it. Sometimes this means being separated from the undesirable department to improve the team.

The New York Rangers find themselves in a tough position. They need to get better without making themselves worse and shift things back in the right direction. It is completing a reconstruction, not a reconstruction. While Braden Schneider and top prospect Brennan Othmann may be the players who scored the top minutes, both could be trades for other teams to gain traction while helping the Rangers improve at the same time.

The depth of the Ranger on the wing makes Othmann consumeable

Starting with Othmann, there is no obvious answer to his NHL trajectory. There is a benefit there to be the top six wingers in the NHL who gets better every season in hockey. For example, in 2024-25, Ottoman averaged 0.74 points per game in the American Hockey League (AHL), slightly higher than last season’s 0.73. It’s reliable production for someone in the AHL season aged 20-22.

However, when summoned to the NHL, the 2021 first-round draft only had 2 points. The good news is that he has played in just 25 games in the major leagues, leaving behind an unknown number that could attract the team.

Why did the Wanderers decide to move the Ottomans during the offseason? First, the right player came, and he caught the attention of President and General Manager Chris Drury (especially the defensive player who could slide next to the top couple Adam Fox).

Likewise, the winger is not currently the positional demand for the organization, and the organization’s highest prospect Gabriel Perreault could be on the verge of full-time NHLER. Plus, rookie Brett Berard stood out last season and playing the top nine roles next season was a safer bet. Not every prospect becomes a high-end NHLER. The risk that Ranger brings by sticking to Othmann is that the longer the front desk waits, the less value his trade is. For example, I saw this recently with 2018 ninth pick Vitali Kravtsov, who later traded a seventh-round pick and career Ahler William Lockwood. The Rangers are better off packing players in their 30s in a deal that they can help the team at 2025-26-plus, rather than repeating the error.

Schneider can help rangers log in to celebrities

For Schneider, the story is a little different, who has established a full-time NHLER. The only problem is that the natives of Prince Albert of Canada almost hit the ceiling. While he made a living with most of his life as a third pair of defenders, the best scenario is that he became a second-hand car defender with limited offense.

But this is not necessarily a bad thing. The young defenders in this league are valuable. For example, we have seen Adam Larsson be replaced with star winger Taylor Hall, while Jamie Drysdale chose Anaheim Ducks Hope as Cutter Gauthier’s future star.

While wingers aren’t a big demand for Rangers, as mentioned above, Schneider trades may make sense if young stars are available. In fact, the Blues had a “high-level discussion” with 23-year-old JJ Peterka’s Buffalo Saber before the trade deadline, according to hockey insider Frank Seravalli. If the negotiations are revisited in the summer, it should be the player who has inspired Drury’s appetite in trading Schneider. Also, don’t forget that Artemi Panarin will turn 34 in October and plans to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. Eventually, rangers will need to find someone who can fill that gap with long-term solutions.

Given that both are young and have some advantages, trading within the fan base may not be the most popular option. However, doing so will give the organization a chance to be better. Other teams will value them and may target transactions. Drury should at least be willing to evaluate the markets of Schneider and Othmann to understand the value of other GMs in the alliance.
