The first 20 minutes ended with a goal. The Red Wings started the game early in the first half with Jeff Petry scoring his first goal of the season. His spot-up shot was aided by a deflection from Bobby McMahon's stick and a strong screen by Michael Rasmussen in front of Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Wall.
A defensive error by the Red Wings allowed the Maple Leafs to tie the game, and the Leafs thought they had tied the game. Mitch Marner was the benefactor of friendly fire deflected off Dylan Larkin's stick, helping his shot bounce off Ville Husso. However, the Red Wings won an offsides challenge to maintain a 1-0 lead, which they held for the remainder of the quarter. At the end of 20 minutes, the Red Wings led 10-6, with both Wall and Husso standing firm for their respective teams.
The 20th-ranked Maple Leafs capitalized on a second-period opportunity when Marner set up a backdoor feed for Auston Matthews to tie the game at 1-1 with 10 seconds remaining. Patrick Kane hit a nifty backhand cross-ice pass in the offensive zone to JT Compher, who then quickly found Moritz Seider for a goal with eight seconds left. The Red Wings lead 2-1.
It didn't take long for the Maple Leafs to tie the game in the third period and Marner once again found himself in the middle of the game. Less than two minutes into the third quarter, his top shot was blocked by Matthew Knies in front of Husso, tying the score to 2-2. Marner wasn't the only one to get involved multiple times, though, as Petry scored again 44 seconds after Knis' goal to give the Red Wings a 3-2 lead. Lucas Raymond scored in an empty net with two seconds left, and the Red Wings withstood the Maple Leafs' attack to seal a 4-2 victory.
In this victory, Husso made 24 of 26 shots, while Wall faced 22 of 25 shots.
The Red Wings will be on the sidelines until December 18, when they will return to the ice to face the Philadelphia Flyers in Detroit. The Maple Leafs hope to bounce back when they return home to take on the Buffalo Sabers tomorrow (December 15).
