Reese Hamilton, an impressive left-shot defender in Whitewood, Saskatchewan, caught the NHL’s eyes for his impressive skating and reaching for Coke. He doesn’t have any future superstars that set him apart, but if he continues to make positive progress at the Western Hockey League (WHL) level, he can build an impressive foundation.
Hamilton faces criticism this season for lack of consistency, and some even call him lazy when things aren’t on the ice. He has been involved in a massive deal between Calgary Killer and Regina Pats, which may affect his confidence in entering a new team, but his game seems to have taken a step back compared to the 2023-24 season. He still shows signs of potential shutdown guards that fans seem to like, but overall, his campaign is not outstanding.
He scored a goal in 20 games against the Killers this season and added three-point assists before being traded to PATS. In the case of PATS, he scored 3 goals and added 11 points in 39 games to score 11 points and reached 14 points in 59 games. In the 2023-24 campaign, he scored 31 points in 42 games.
His decline in offensive production seems to have hurt his draft stocks as he fell to many draft committees for the upcoming 2025 NHL entry draft. A team still has the opportunity to see if he continues to develop and find confidence again in the middle leg, but there is a good chance he won’t hear his name for a while.

Hamilton will be an interesting player in the upcoming draft. He is certainly a risky option, but he may be the one the team is willing to seize the opportunity. I wouldn’t say it was a guarantee that he was selected, but it’s safe to say that he might hear his name in the middle to late in the draft, and I would be surprised if he wasn’t selected. I think he ranks 120 to 155 overall.

NHL Potential
As I’ve mentioned many times, Hamilton will be a risky choice. In a perfect world, he returned to the WHL and found his confidence again as a rear-round pick. If he can do that, in about four seasons, he hasn’t had a world that can’t compete for the bottom-level jobs in the NHL. In the worst case scenario, he became the bottom-level guard at the American Hockey League (AHL) level and played most of his career.

Awards/Achievements
Hamilton has won the award. In the 2021-22 season, he scored the highest points in the Canadian Sports School Hockey League (CSSHL) U15 Division defender and was also named the top CSSHL U15 defender. In the 2023-24 season, he won a bronze medal at the U18 World Youth Championship. This season, he won the Hlinka Gretzky Cup gold medal.
