Rickie Fowler teamed up with Lexi Thompson to shoot a first-round 63 and finish 14th at last week's Grant Thornton Invitational.
Fowler's equipment change ahead of October's Sanderson Farms Championship has spurred an uptick in form – he ended 2024 with four straight top-25 finishes and the first nine months of the year Only entered twice.
He continues the trend of updating the bag by introducing the new Cobra DS-Adapt X with a 9-degree head and a Mitsubishi Diamana WB 73TX shaft.
It turns out Fowler had done his research before making the change.
“I've been doing a lot of driver testing, trying to learn as much as possible, as well as (testing) future stuff (for Cobra),” he said. “I've always loved the club and understand why they feel a certain way.
“The same goes for the shaft. I do a lot of things not only with our drivers but with other drivers just to try to learn and better understand why certain things are in my hands and my swing. There was a certain feeling to me during the flight that made a difference.
“For me, understanding it better ultimately helps.”
He ultimately chose the Cobra DS-Adapt X over the lowest-spin LS version because the X clubhead had the precision forgiveness he required.
“To me, the X head is not slower or much slower than the LS,” he said. “It's more of the stability aspect of it. I like to play out of the fairway as much as possible. That's a big factor for me and all the testing I do.
Fowler talked about Cobra's new serving technology. It uses the FutureFit33 hosel system, which allows for 33 different loft combinations per driver head.
“There's definitely more fitting and fine-tuning capabilities,” he said. “Before, you only had a few heads, a few different loft options.
“The ability to adjust, you're stuck with whatever lie angle and loft you choose; it's just a normal setup, or maybe a little more upright. I think there used to be about 6 or so options, now There are 33 of them.
“It’s nice to be able to adjust lie angle and loft independently because sometimes you want less loft, but you might want it to be upright, or you might want it to be flat and then vice versa on the loft. Sure. It's nice to have more options to try and dial things in.
“I think that's one of the biggest changes. I do feel like the Adapt head is better. I feel like I'm in a really good position with the X head, which I'm playing this week (at Grant Thornton).
