In early 2019, Bob MacIntyre was preparing for his first season on what was then called the European Tour.
The Scot's amateur career flourished, winning the Scottish Amateur Championship but losing in the Amateur final before representing Great Britain and Ireland at the 2017 Walker Cup at Los Angeles Country Club.
The Challenge Tour was supposed to be a tough tour, but McIntyre got it right on his first try thanks to his stellar 2018 season. Next up is his rookie season, where he will make his first start of 2019 in Abu Dhabi.
As the only lefty on the course, he uses TaylorMade's Aeroburner 15° No. 3 fairway wood, released in late 2014.
“If something works, I'm not going to change it. New stuff is coming out, but I haven't got it yet. Why would I change something if I have more control over it?” he explained.
“Even from a young age, I couldn't find the driver I wanted. I was still using the TaylorMade Aeroburner 3-wood I'd had since I was 17. They just couldn't get me out of it. I found the 3-wood And putters are really hard to find.
“When I first got the Aeroburner, I couldn’t hit it, and it sat in my garage for two years, and then I decided I needed something that didn’t spin as much, and if I tried and hit a good shot, it would Start at 280 yards and it'll get there.

“If I miss it, it's still going to go on, if I miss someone else, they'll spin too much. There's a lot of value on the European Tour, so hopefully it works for me.
The European Tour is now known as the DP World Tour, and McIntyre has now won three times on the tour. He is also a two-time PGA Tour winner and Ryder Cup player. This week, he begins the 2025 PGA Tour season in Hawaii with the TaylorMade Aeroburner 3-wood still in use.
It's been in and out of the bag a number of times, but made another appearance at the Dunhill Links a few months ago and was recognized at the Sony Open.
This is from the days when TaylorMade's popular white metal woods and Aeroburners were non-adjustable. According to TaylorMade, it has the “strongest clubface in golf,” which is needed to support its standout feature, the new Speed Pocket.
This cavity in the sole of the club extends deeper into the fairway wood than before, allowing for more face flex.
This helps improve sweet spot and ball speed, while the lower spin is a plus in the box, which explains why McIntyre still finds its way into places like windy Scotland and Hawaii.
Beyond that, nearly a decade ago, it boasted an aerodynamic shape created by a shallow clubface, a raised crown and a new hosel fin that reduces drag created by the hosel.
This raised a few eyebrows, but McIntyre is his own man and he knows the value of feeling comfortable.
