January 8, 2011 Rohit Sharma It was bought by Mumbai Indians (MI) for $2 million at the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction. He represented Deccan Chargers in the first three seasons of the cash-rich league.
He completed 14 years with the Mumbai Indians on Wednesday. He became an all-time legend of the franchise after leading the Mumbai-based franchise to five IPL titles. Rohit took over the captaincy midway through the 2013 IPL, taking over from Ricky Ponting, who was in a sluggish batting form. The Nagpur-born player brought instant success to Mumbai, beating arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the final to claim their first ever title.
Mumbai subsequently won the title in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. Pune Supergiants and Delhi Capitals. Mumbai Indians became the first team to win five IPL titles. Rohit is also the first player to add five IPL trophies to his cabinet as captain. MS Dhoni joins him as he leads CSK to their fifth IPL title in 2023.
Rohit's stellar performance as captain of Mumbai Indians has helped him climb the ranks in the race for captaincy of the Indian team. He started leading the Men in Blue in the absence of regular skipper Virat Kohli before taking up the role full-time in February 2022.

Rohit was unceremoniously relieved of MI captaincy ahead of IPL 2024
Ahead of IPL 2024, Rohit Sharma was sacked as MI captain after three dismal seasons with the bat. He was replaced by Hardik Pandya, who led the Gujarat Titans to the finals in the first two editions of the IPL and the title in 2022. There was intense anger from fans who felt the team did not perform well enough to respect Rohit's immense contribution.

There are speculations that Rohit is unhappy with the management and wants to quit the team before the 2025 IPL mega auction. However, these speculations were put to rest when the 38-year-old was retained by the team for INR 16.3 Crores.
In 217 innings for Mumbai, Rohit struck 5,731 runs at an average of 29.69 and a strike rate of 131.05. He has 36 half-centuries and two tons to his name. His highest score of 109* was achieved by scoring just 60 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2012 at Eden Gardens.
