Rory McIlroy conquered his Masters on Sunday with his first green jacket victory. It was a historic victory for many reasons, one of which was McIlroy’s first professional with lifelong friends and Caddy Harry Diamond on his schoolbag. McIlroy talked about Diamond’s important role in his career and life Sunday night, and also pointed out a piece of advice his caddie gave him at a critical moment to help him win.

Rory defends the ball boy after Master wins

Understandably, McIlroy often stirs up emotions after an anticipated and dramatic victory on Sunday evening.

But it was his caddie who made him cry in the post-winning press conference at the Masters Media Center.

“I know Harry [Diamond] I started when I was seven years old. I met him on putts at the Holleywood Golf Club. We had a lot of great time together,” McIlroy said, tears in his eyes, “He has been like me all his life. ”

McIlroy then explained that this victory made even more sense given the criticism Diamond faced for his relative experience as a professional caddy, and McIlroy stuck with his friends in the travel loop.

“In order to be able to share that with him after all the close calls we encountered, all the crap he had to take from people who knew nothing about the game, yes, it’s the same thing for him,” McIlroy said.

He continued: “[Diamond] It’s a huge part of what I do and I can’t think of someone better than him to share. ”

Of course McIlroy is rolling up. That said, there was some advice until Diamonds set out in the playoffs.

“After scoring, Harry and I walked to the golf cart and brought us back to the 18th tee, and he said to me, ‘Okay, good friend, we’ll take it on Monday morning.” “I thought, ‘Yes, there will definitely be.'”

This simple message focuses Rory on the task at hand so he can win later.

McIlroy added: “It’s easy to reset. He basically said to me, look, you’re going to give you the right arm to the playoffs,” he added.
