Rory McIlroy smashed the U.S. kick-off mark with his club on Oakmont’s 17th hole.

Rory McIlroy made two nights of birdies Friday night, laying off staff at the 2025 U.S. Open. You would think that would make him happy. You’ll be wrong. McIlroy’s frustration boiled in the second round of Oakmont, with the Masters champion smashing the tee with his club.
Before that, McIlroy was caught in the Tomahawk to promote his club, and McIlroy later refused USGA’s request to meet with the media.
McIlroy struggles early in the second round, throwing club
After shooting 74 in the first round at Oakmont, McIlroy knew he needed a steady record on Friday to compete for his second U.S. Open title. But at first, only double black squares appeared on his scorecard.
McIlroy quickly moved to eight holes in the tournament with a devastating double bogey on the first and third holes. He was with the birds at No. 9, but by then the reality was obvious. Instead of fighting for the lead, McIlroy worked hard to advance in all Friday’s battles.
When he lowered the bogey to above 8 at 11 o’clock, the frustration approached a breakout point. So much so that when he shot a squirrel approach in the 12th hole of the 5 stroke, McIlroy lifted the club back and threw his club, tomahawk style, 20 yards on the fairway.

Despite the poor second shot and club throws, McIlroy saved par at 12 and then took two more cards in 13 and 14. At the age of 15, he sent him back to seven on the tailoring line on the second birdie that day.
At that time, McIlroy knew he needed at least his way, even getting another birdie to secure a serving time on Saturday. So when his tee starts to get away from the target on the 4th 17 short, he loses it.
McIlroy took his club, which appeared to be the wood of the fairway and smashed into a white American kick-off mark on the 17th tee. Tee Marker exploded during the impact, flying a piece back into his leg. Check out the moments of anger below.
Despite the excitement, McIlroy was able to finish par with 17 points and ended twice in a day with the 18-year-old birdie, finishing in six games, better than the seven-game cut line.
But McIlroy refused to speak to reporters after the round as he did on Thursday night due to the routine of the last five major champions. Therefore, we must wait to hear his own explanation of a series of unpleasant course behaviors.
But since we won the 2025 Masters in April, it reminded me of McIlroy’s behavior. McIlroy admits that fulfilling his dream of winning a professional grand slam for life has left his motivation gone. But it also made him skip post-media meetings more frequently, as it was repeated at the PGA Championship last month.
