Augusta, Ga. – Angel Cabrera, who collapsed at Rory McIlroy, is one of the reasons for his rise.

With McIlroy entering Sunday’s final round of Masters, in search of his first green jacket, he opened the locker when he arrived at Augusta National and found the notes for the 2009 Masters champion. Fourteen years ago, when McIlroy entered the final round of the Masters, they combined again to shoot only the 80 with little idea, while Augusta National quits in the fog.

The message is short. The message was remembered. McIlroy won this year’s Masters in Justin Rose’s playoffs a few hours later, with McIlroy pointing out the notes specifically at his press conference.

“Honestly, you know, what did the last green in the playoffs have produced on me, at least 11 years, if not 14 years of suppressed emotions,” McIlroy said. “You know, since 2011, I think it’s so ironic. I arrived at my locker this morning and opened it, there were notes from Angel Cabrera and wish me good luck.

“And Angel Cabrera is the player I played on the last day of 2011. It was a nice touch, a little ironic. It’s been 14 years, but thankfully, I finished the job.”

It is worth noting that Cabrera missed the layoffs on Friday. He has been playing his first master since 2019, due to convictions of family assault and intimidation for two former partners.

For McIlroy, the win was also his first major win since 2014, and it completed a professional grand slam after the PGA title, the U.S. Open and the Open title.

“It’s very difficult,” McIlroy said of his major drought. “I think I’ve taken this burden since August 2014. It’s been almost 11 years.

“It’s not only about winning my next major, but also about winning a professional grand slam.

“Yes, it’s hard, I’m trying to be the most positive with the most positive attitude I’ve shown, and I think that kind of accumulated experience I’m back here every year, I just feel like I feel a little comfortable with the shots I need. I talked about that at the beginning of the week, but you know, you know, talking about it, actually talking about it.

“Yes, today is – today is hard. I was incredibly nervous this morning. As you’ve witnessed, I was very nervous about the first hole, but as I said, that kind of calmed me down, I was able to bounce back and prove that I’ve talked about a lot of things.
