World No. 1 golfer Scotty Scheffler was stabbed by broken glass in the palm of his right hand while preparing dinner on Christmas Day and underwent surgery to remove the shards of glass, the PGA Tour announced Friday.

Scheffler, the reigning PGA Tour Player of the Year after winning seven times in 2024, will miss three to four weeks. He has withdrawn from the 2025 season-opening Sentinel, which will be held Jan. 2-5 in Kapalua, Hawaii.

Scheffler hopes to return to action Jan. 16-19 at the American Express Stadium in La Quinta, California.

“A small shard of glass remained in the palm and required surgery,” Scheffler's manager Blake Smith said in a statement. “He was told he should be back to 100 percent in three to four weeks. Unfortunately, he will have to retire from the Sentinels.”

Scheffler is coming off one of the best seasons in PGA Tour history. His seven tour victories were the most since Tiger Woods in 2007, and he won a second green jacket at the Masters, a gold medal at the Paris Olympics and a FedEx cup champion.

The 28-year-old is the first golfer since Woods (2005 to 2007) to win the Jack Nicklaus Award as the PGA Tour Player of the Year in three consecutive seasons.

On Dec. 8, Scheffler won his second consecutive title at the Hero World Challenge, an unofficial tournament hosted by Woods in the Bahamas, adding to Scheffler's nine wins around the world this year.
