When the Pittsburgh Penguins missed the playoffs again, trade rumors surrounding Sidney Crosby are expected this summer. Although Crosby said he wanted to retire, become a member of the Penguins, re-sign in a team-friendly deal and claimed he was reluctant to trade, fans continued to find excuses to connect their favorite teams with the superstar forward. In a recent Eric Engels article, a sensational deal between the Penguins and the Montreal Canadaens was proposed.

I would be commendable where it expires because Engels is clear in his article that he mentions that Crosby is unlikely to leave the Penguin, but if there is a world that changes his mind, he is looking at the possibility of a deal. He listed the Los Angeles Kings and Colorado Avalanche as other potential destinations of interest, but believes Habs has more assets to make the Penguins more seductive.
In his hypothetical blockbuster, he suggested that the Canadians acquire Crosby in exchange for the 16th overall pick in the 2025 NHL entry bill, the top 10 protected first-round pick in 2026 to 2026, and a second-round pick in 2025 or 2026, Defender logan Mailloux and forward Oliver Kapanen.
Frankly, it’s a solid trade package for the Penguin, and if the Canadians intend to be next season, it makes sense for Canadians to spend some assets on veterans like Crosby. The problem with the proposed trade idea is that the Habs don’t seem to be considered a serious contender next season. They entered the first round of the playoffs this season and, while shocking some fans, won the right to play the game. It is possible that they will give up many of the future assets of Crosby for two or three seasons, which is why I think this is unrealistic.
Realistic trade ideas, unrealistic situations
Judging from Engels’ trade ideas, this is indeed a realistic trade package, and if Crosby leaves the penguin or asks for a deal, the penguin may seek rewards. I just can’t see Crosby trying to leave the world of drafting his team, especially after he cuts his salary again, he sticks with it. If Canadians mean to Crosby, it would make sense if they could continue to improve and build on a successful 2024-25 campaign, but for now, that doesn’t make any sense.
The avalanche has been connected to Crosby for some time due to the obvious connection between Crosby and Nathan Mackinnon. The Kings have a lot of money to spend this summer, and there is a chance that some of their big-name free agents will enter the open market, plus they are eager to leave the first round of the playoffs next season and they are eager to swing at Crosby.
Ultimately, it’s always fun to think about the appearance of the Crosby Trade, but always considered unrealistic. Crosby is looking to cement his legacy as a member of the same team throughout his career, and although the team decided to continue looking for a new head coach from Mike Sullivan, I don’t think that’s enough to convince Crosby that he should go elsewhere to end his career. This is Engels’ strong suggestion if Crosby asked the Penguin to move, but he didn’t, he wouldn’t, he wouldn’t.
