Mumbai's iconic Wankhede Cricket Stadium celebrated its golden jubilee in grand style on Sunday (January 19) evening with an energy-packed event that included music, dance and an impressive laser show that delighted attendees. It was undoubtedly an unforgettable night.

More than 60 international cricketers (men and women) from Mumbai celebrated the incredible 50th anniversary of the Wankhede Stadium with the iconic legends joining the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) on Sunday (January 19), Celebrate this historic moment in grand style.

Highlights of the golden jubilee celebrations at the Wankhede Stadium include the unveiling of commemorative stamps and the presence of Indian cricket team captains Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Ravi from Mumbai ·Congratulations to Ravi Shastri, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma and Diana Edulji.

Apart from these moments and cultural festivals showcasing Marathi culture, dance by Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar was also a highlight of the Mumbai event. After being invited by the anchor, Gavaskar entertained the audience by dancing to the title track of Shah Rukh Khan's Bollywood hit song “Om Shanti Om”.

Even Diana Edulji joined the ranks of India's legendary batsmen and the duo set the stage on fire with their action. Sunil Gavaskar showed off his singing talent by enthusiastically singing along to the song 'Om Shanti Om' and even humming the song at the host's request. In the viral video shared by MCA, Sachin Tendulkar also sang the song 'Om Shanti Om'.

Meanwhile, Sunil Gavaskar said the Wankhede Stadium is very special to him, with the legendary batsman telling how it was “love at first sight”. The Times of India quoted Gavaskar as saying at the event: “When the Wankhede Stadium was built in 1974, our dressing room was downstairs. When we first stepped onto the training ground, it was love at first sight.

The former India captain further added, “Before this, we played at the Brabourne Stadium, which belonged to a club (Indian Cricket Club). But coming here, it feels like the home of Mumbai cricket. When It's always a different feeling when you have a home court. I still feel like it's a home court every time I come in and it's a wonderful feeling in my chest.

An introduction to historical moments at Wankhede Stadium

Apart from the Mumbai cricket team, the Wankhede Stadium also holds a special place in the hearts of cricket fans as it hosted the celebrations of India's first T20 World Cup win in 2007 under the leadership of MS Dhoni and witnessed the legendary victory in the 2011 World Cup .

Recently, the stadium also paid tribute to Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team's victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup. It was inaugurated during the fifth and final Test of the series. The stadium has also hosted 63 international matches so far, including 27 Test matches, 28 ODI matches and 8 T20I matches, as well as many domestic matches and Indian Premier League (IPL) matches.
