Whatever happens in the next week or two, the hockey players raised in Surrey will improve the Calder Cup as the American Hockey League champion.

So far, the 23-year-old Sourdif has scored three goals and three assists in 12 games while playing 28 minutes for the AHL Eastern Conference champions.

“This is my first time in the (AHL) final, it’s really good hockey, it’s really intense,” he said. “That’s why you play right, trying to win. We focus on winning.

He added: “We’ve been watching the (Abbotsford-Texas) series and it’s really good. I’m sure there’s a lot of buzz back home, especially at Abbotsford. They’ve attracted good fans. … Abbotsford is a really good team as well as Texas.”

Sourdif’s parents still live in Border Park, where he grew up and played hockey with Surrey Minor for the first time. At Burnaby Winter Club, he was a teammate of Baynes, 24 years old.

“We played Peewee there, and then we went to the college team at Delta Hockey Academy, and he went to the reserve team, so I met him there,” Sourdif said. “In the gnomes, we played in Valley West before he was called, and I wanted to spend the rest of the season, around the (WHL) Red Deer during Christmas.

“We stayed in touch, but not much throughout the season,” he added. “When I got home, we would get together and golf a few rounds, like some of our friends. I skated with him in the summer, too. Since we first played together, time flies, time flies. He was a great talent. He was a great talent and so far his career has been so happy, so I’m glad he.”

The Calder Cup final began with two weekend matches in Charlotte (Friday and Sunday), followed by three home games of the Karnaks on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday (June 17, 19, 21). If needed, the last two games of the series will be played in Charlotte from June 23 to 25.

On February 25, Sourdif was called up by the Panthers in Nashville and scored his first NHL goal at a good pace and played with Jesper Boqvist. The next day, the Panthers reassigned him to the AHL Checkers, and he performed well all season.

Of course, this winter, he hopes to play more NHL games with Florida, but now Sourdif says Calder Cup is his only focus.

“I’m not too worried about next season now, I just want to help my team win the championship,” he stressed.
