Olympic golf hybrid team approval International Olympic Committee Executive Committee

Lausanne, Switzerland (Tuesday, April 15, 2025) – The International Golf Federation (IGF) is pleased to confirm that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Committee approved the addition of the Olympic Golf Hybrid Team event, which will debut at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles (LA28) and complement the men’s men’s Olympic Golf Competition and women’s competition and women’s competition. These three Olympic golf matches will be played at the Riviera Country Club in the LA28 Olympics.

“We are delighted to see the mixed team event added to the LA 2028 plan,” said Antony Scanlon, executive director of IGF. “Golf has had incredible success in Paris in 2024, and as we continue to build positive efforts on the momentum of Rio in 2016 and Tokyo in 2020, we are delighted to get more attention with this additional format. The athletes are very passionate about their playing with fellow countrymen and we look forward to their competition in the Los Angeles.”

The mixed team match will be a 36-hole match – with 18 foursomes (replacement shots) in the first round and then with 18 fours (best balls) in the last round. Each country will have a team consisting of one male and one female who are already eligible for the men’s and women’s Olympic golf. The mixed team match will be held after four rounds of men’s individual Olympic golf competitions, before participating in four rounds of women’s Olympic golf competitions. Joining the mixed event marks the first Olympic golf tournament since the 1904 Olympics.

On April 9, the IOC Executive Committee approved the LA28 activity plan and athlete quota. The LA28 program has a total of 351 medal matches, 22 more than Paris 2024 (329), with a core athlete quota of 10,500 and an additional 698 sports are allocated to the five sports proposed by the LA28 Organizing Committee (LA28 Organizing Committee (LA28) (baseball/softball, softball, cricket, cricket, Flag Football, Lacrosse and Squash). LA28’s event plan was formulated based on requests made by the International Sports Federation to the International Olympic Committee. The decision of the IOC Executive Committee follows the recommendations of the Olympic Planning Commission and the principles approved in 2023: Gender Equality, Global Attractive, Cost and Complexity Awareness of the athlete’s focus. In the boxing match approved by the IOC meeting in March 2025, the LA28 Sports Plan consists of 31 sports events, with five additional sports proposed by the Organization Committee and approved by the IOC in 2023.

Golf is one of six sports – adding archery, track and field (4x100m hybrid relay), gymnastics, boating coastal beach sprints and table tennis – adding mixed gender competitions to the LA28.
