The Oilers beat the Golden Knights 5-4 in overtime to lead the series 2-0 – Hockey Writer – Edmonton Oilers

The Golden Knights of Vegas enter unknown territory. They are now trailing 2-0 in the series due to a 5-4 overtime loss to the Edmonton Oilers in Game 2. The fatal duo of the Oilers, Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid, remained quiet all night until the overtime tied 2-on-1 to win.

Las Vegas is now facing a steep climb, with only 14% chance of winning the series after trailing 2-0, and most teams have a hard time getting away with it. In Game 2, the Golden Knights hit the 2024 Western Conference Championship in the round-trip battle, but that wasn’t enough.

Finally, the Oiler takes control of the series in almost every way. This is a review of Las Vegas falling 5-4 into Game 2 in overtime.

Game review

Game 2 starts very similar to Game 1, with Vegas hitting the ball first. This time, Victor Olofsson delivered on his first professional playoff goal, a timely goal as the Golden Knights hoped to set the tone sooner.

Midway through the second time, the Oilers took the momentum with back-to-back goals from Jake Walman and Vasily Podkolzin, bringing their lead to 3-1. Calvin Pickard also began to settle down, abandoning several quality opportunities throughout the period and putting Las Vegas in trouble.

William Karlsson then redirected Jack Eichel’s shot, cutting the Oilers’ lead in half, and the Golden Knights lowered the second half 3-2.

Adin Hill’s tough night continued on the third as Evander Kane buried the third playoffs, extending Edmonton’s lead to 4-2. Olofsson responded with his second powerful goal, reflecting his first goal and pulling Vegas back within 4-3 in one inning.

With less than 10 minutes left, there was an up and down night Alex Pietrangelo strengthening the equalizer to make it a 4-4.

Overtime started a tough blow to Vegas as Nicolas Roy was asked to cross-check and got five minutes of professional and game misconduct. The oilers couldn’t play with the extended power, but soon after McDavid crossed Eichel at the time and fed Draisaitl to the game-the Game-the Winner, a 5-4 overtime win.

Las Vegas and Edmonton will return at the Oil Country at 6:00 p.m. Saturday as the Golden Knights hope to cut with the Oilers’ 2-0 series lead.
