These fun options can help your game

The Fred couple exchanged multiple currencies this week at Augusta National.

Many of the interesting things I want to track down during the Masters are any wisdom in the past that champions at Augusta National. This week, some of the more undisclosed equipment settings are considered long by players by most measures, and for a man, they are all inclined to get as much help as possible in the bag.

I’ve compiled some of the settings below (probably some useful insights for your own game).

Adam Scott, Dustin Johnson and Tommy Fleetwood’s 9 Wood

Let’s start with the 9-wood trend we’ve seen in the past year or so. The first one I saw was Tommy Fleetwood, back in March 2023. The idea behind the deal is a 230 club that lands like a wedge. As PGA Tour Greens gets stronger, the ability to hit something at a high speed at a gap number is a big asset.

The three players have 9 woods this week, they are all the same model, replace the same club, and for the same reason, fix the green on holes like 5, 11, 13 and 15.

Tour-proven performance The most popular model among tour and amateurs is the Qi10 Fairway is the ideal fusion of distance and forgiveness, while the Precision CG position offers a combination of high launch and low rotation. The new Infinity Crown Infinity Crown provides a clean, uninterrupted view at the address while also optimizing performance. Engineers rely on this new design to reshape the club, reducing weight at the club head to maintain high inertia and have an expanded facial profile to inspire confidence and generate ball speed.

Fred’s ping g430 hybrid bouquet

The Freds of the United States kicked the second goal on the 13th hole in the second round of the 2025 Masters Championship in Augusta, Georgia on April 11, 2025.

At this point, the story is well documented, but for the average golfer, the Freds abandoned his 4, 5 and 6 iron on the Ping G430 4H, 5H and 6H, a sign that really caught the attention.

Fred has struggled with back problems for more than 30 years and as he gets older, his efforts to increase the ball more than he admits. Switching to a replacement as a hybrid, it can be easy to use in that part of the bag no matter how it feels. Knowing that you can cruise and still reach peak altitude without over-imposing your own numbers is huge for couples. The mathematics is simple, the time for 4H is 205, 5H, 195 and 6H 185.

Specification:

Ping G430 Custom Hybrid

$299.99 on Fairway Jockey

The PING G430 hybrid is full of innovations such as the Carbonfly Wrap, Ping’s latest technology and the key to more distance and green holding drag power. In addition to proven technology face-to-face technology and spinning, they provide the speed and performance that golfers need. They are six loft options (2H/17°, 3H/19°, 4H/22°, 5H/26°, 6H/30°, 7/34°), and they are ideal for mid-size and remote replacements that help fill gaps in players’ games. Carbonfly wraps a lightweight composite crown wrap in the toe and toe segments of the skirt, saving 10 grams of weight, which redistributes to achieve lower CG and increase ball speed. The composite also plays a role in pleasant sounds. Face Wrap Technology FaceWrap Technology, variable thickness, high-strength Maraving steel tiles are wrapped around the sole and crown of stainless steel heads, resulting in faster elasticity for increased ball speed and higher launches for increased distance. The variable rotation radius of rotation improves the performance of the entire face (especially on thin lenses) by reducing the rotation to increase the rotation speed. Tungsten Back Weight A Tungsten Back Weight enlarges the weight of the circumference to ensure maximum forgiveness. Track Adjustment Lightweight 8-bit Hosel can adjust the loft (±1.5°) and lying down (3° plane than Std) to further dial the ball for best results.

PING G440 SFT custom driver

$599 on fairway jockey

The G440 Driver Family (Max, LST, SFT) is optimized with multiple advancements to deliver higher ball speeds, including Ping’s deepest CG and shallower, thinner faces, while continuing to ensure the game-changing forgiveness that Ping drivers expect. Golfers who require slice correction techniques are best suited for the G440 SFT (Direct Flight) option, which has two positions (Draw and Draw+), adjustable 23 grams rear weight. A highly tolerant, lighter head weight can make the back weight heavier. Faster faces are shallower and thinner, and the face increases the ball speed to increase distance, and a higher launch. The sound design is new shaping, the carbon crown and inner ribs will create a soft impact experience. Freestyle design saves weight to lower CG and increases forgiveness. Allow more heel flexion to stabilize the face.

It’s not surprising that this man does something like this, but doubling it on different parts of the bag is a wild scene. Phil Mickelson has been driving whack-a-mole between the ping g440 LST and the Callaway Elyte (Core Model) for the past few months. When I was in Liv Miami, I also noticed another double: he had two 5 woods.

Regarding the driver, it’s simple: like his experiment when he won in 2006, one driver (Caraway) was reserved for nuclear weapons and the other driver (ping g440lst) was used for fairway seekers. Callaway Elyte fires higher, pings the ball in contrast with faster speeds and lower spins.

Regarding 5 wood, Ping Tour Rep Spencer Rothluebber told me that his build is longer, stronger (basically 4 wood), and the other is shorter (nearly 7 wood). Both are designed to reach specific numbers and specific heights in Augusta National 2, 8, 13 and 15.

5 wood specifications:

(4) G430 18* @ 16.25, Plane minus settings, Graphite design AD VF 8X prompt 1, 42.25, D4

(7) G430 18* @18*, STD settings, graphite design AD VF 9X TIP 2″, 41.5″, D4
