TJ Oshie of Washington Capitals announces retirement from NHL – Hockey Writer – NHL News

On June 9, 2025, an injured TJ Oshie announced her retirement. The 38-year-old winger missed the entire 2024-25 season with a back injury and called it a pro after the 1,010 regular season NHL game. His eight-year contract with the Washington capital will expire in the summer.

Despite his long NHL career, the US-born Oshie will be remembered forever by a sequence. At the 2014 Sochi Olympics, he scored four gunfight goals in the Hall of Fame combined Netminder Sergei Bobrovsky, defeating the hosts in the preliminary round. The United States lost in the bronze medal game, but the valor of the Olympics was an outstanding moment in the tournament.

Oshie has gotten rid of international games and is a solid top six player in the NHL. The 2005 first-round draft pick made his debut with St. Louis Blues in 2008-09, and this season he has accumulated 39 points in 57 games. The pace of every 82 games was 56 points, and despite playing until the age of 37, he maintained the exact pace throughout his career.

Oshie spent seven seasons with the Blues and scored 310 points (110 goals, 200 assists) in 443 games and scored 71 points. He semi-regularly (once) played in the playoffs but failed to reach the Western Conference finals. After St. Louis became a fan favorite, he was sent to the capital to wrap around winger Troy Brouwer.

In Washington, the Oshie is the same player but is able to build a strong playoff resume. He scored only nine points in 30 playoff games, but scored double-digit points in three straight games in the Capitals. The peak was in 2018, when he scored 21 points in 24 games, on his way to reaching Washington, D.C.’s first Stanley Cup title. He has a team-leading six strong goals.

But Oshie’s time in Washington is more than just a brilliant playoff. In 567 regular season games, he scored 385 points (192 goals, 193 assists) and 16 points.

In the United States, the Blues and the capital, the Olympic Games have a great influence. He retired is one of 404 players to dress up in 1,000 games.
