May 17 is a very good date for hockey fans in Long Island and Iron City. However, Twin Cities fans did not enjoy the date as they did on the Orient. This time machine has been fired and is ready to take us back to relive all the best moments this date has to offer.
A New York Islander’s Day
The Islanders dominated the NHL with a four-game winning streak of Stanley Cup and fifth appearance in the finals in the first half of the 1980s. Having said that, mid-May is a good time for islanders to recall.
On May 17, 1980, Hall of Fame guard Denis Potvin defeated the visiting Philadelphia Flyers 6-2 in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup final and added two assists. The victory gave them a 2-1 lead, and they ended up winning in six games.
A year later, in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup final, Butch Goring won three wins to beat Minnesota Polaris 7-5. Goring became the first player in NHL history to have a playoff hat-trick with two different teams.
North Stars forward Dino Ciccarelli set a NHL single-game scoring record with 21 points in the same game. A few years later, Ciccarelli became the first player to have a playoff hat-trick with three different teams.
The islanders occupied the greatest dynasty in the history of the alliance on May 17, 1983. They beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-2 to complete four games and won their fourth Stanley Cup in years. Bryan Trottier, John Tonelli and Mike Bossy all scored in 97 seconds of the first stage to control the game as early as possible. Bossy’s goal would be the game winner, making him the first player since Jack Darragh to win a Cup goal in the back-to-back playoffs in 1921.

First playoffs
On May 17, 1979, Ken Dryden of the Montreal Canadiens became the first goalkeeper to score in the Stanley Cup final. In Game 3 of the Championship Series, he scored an assist in the third phase of Jacques Lemaire, who defeated the New York Rangers 4-1 in the Canadian team, and scored a 4-1 victory in the New York Rangers.
Gretzky became the first player in NHL history to earn 200 professional playoff points on May 17, 1987. In Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final, he beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-2 with goals and assists. Four more players have scored at least 200 playoff scores since then, but Gretzky still has a 382-point record. He is the only player to enter the 300-point plateau.
Alex Nedeljkovic became a rookie goalkeeper in the playoffs since the 2006 Stanley Cup final, Cam Ward won the Carolina Hurricanes on May 17, 2021, when his team beat the Edmonton Oilers 5-2 in Game 1 of Game 1 of 2021. He was the final of the Calder Trophy in the final of that season in the final of the season in a match that released a record of 23-15-5-3 and a 1.90 Goal Average (GAA) and .932 Percent Savings (SV%).

On May 17, 1995, Doug Gilmour scored two second-cycle assists to pass Dave Keon as the Toronto Maple Leafs’ all-time leading playoff scorer, breaking the old record of 67 points. The pair beat the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 6 of the Western Conference quarterfinals in 5-4 overtime. He still has 77 professional playoff points in Toronto, maintaining a franchise record.
Tyler Seguin is an important part of the Boston Bruins’ 2011 Stanley Cup. On May 17, 2011, he tied for the rookie’s NHL playoff record with the most points for a period of time. In the second game of the Eastern Conference finals, the Bruins beat the Tampa Bay Chargers 6-5, and he scored two goals and assisted with two more goals. He is just the second rookie to score 4 points in the same period and the first teenager to do so.
Odd number and ending
On May 17, 1992, Jaromir Jagr won in overtime, leading the Penguins to defeat the first game of the Welsh Conference Final 4-3. This is the third game in the playoffs, in which JAGR won the game’s goal.
Three years later, the Bruins fired head coach Brian Sutter behind the bench that lost to the Penguins in 1992 after three seasons with the team. Sutter’s Bruins have a 120-73-23 record in 216 regular season games and a 7-15 record in the playoffs. He was replaced by Steve Kasper, who lasted only two seasons in Boston.
Later that night, Craig Janney scored two helpless goals in the second stage, allowing the San Jose Sharks to beat the visiting Calgary Flames 5-3 in Game 6 of the Western Conference quarterfinals. Two days later, the Sharks won Game 7 with double overtime.
Mike Modano scored in overtime on May 17, 1999, and Brett Hull scored two assists as Dallas Stars eliminated St. Louis Blues in Game 6 of the Western Conference Semi-Finals. In the Western Conference finals, the stars advanced to the Colorado Avalanche, the first and only Stanley Cup champion in their franchise history.
On May 17, 2001, Martin Brodeur attended 100Th The Devil’s Professional Playoff Game. He won 11Th In Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals, his career was closed to the Penguins 3-0. Brian Rafalski is an offensive hero with goals and assists in the first stage.
Sidney Crosby defeated the Ottawa Senator 4-3 in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals on May 17, 2013. All three goals were in the first stage and gave him 100 professional playoff points. He is the fifth player in league history, and he has achieved milestones in 75 games
Marc-Andre Fleury made her last appearance in the Penguin uniform on May 17, 2017. He was replaced by Matt Murray, who kept the net for the second consecutive Stanley Cup for the rest of Pittsburgh. A few days after the season ended, Fleury was selected by the Vegas Golden Knights in the NHL expansion draft.
On May 17, 2024, Cale Makar became the fifth defensive player in NHL history, registering 80 professional playoff points in 80 games or less, joining Orr, Coffey, Leeetch and Macinnis.
In the same game, Matt Duchene became the fourth player in Star/North Star History, scoring season-defining goals in one game, a game that requires multiple overtime games as the star went to the Western Conference Finals by 2-1 in overtime.
