The best prospect and possible first pick Matthew Schaefer did very little prospect. Although there are only 17 games in the 2024-25 season, he still needs to complete the North American prospects of the 2025 NHL Draft.
Now, Schaefer thinks he is healthy and can be fully prepared to set off.
Schaefer suffered a broken collarbone at the World Junior Championships, forcing the Erie Otters star to miss the rest of the season, including all nine playoff games. Although he could return if his recovery time was ahead of schedule, his team was eliminated before it could happen.
On Friday, on the NHL combine harvester in Buffalo, Schaefer provided the latest news about his health and his fitness tests he will be doing on Saturday.
“I’ve been completely cured,” Schefell said. “I won’t bench press and pull up because I didn’t do it. But I’m totally cured.”
This is good news for the New York Islanders and the team with the highest draft of the San Jose Sharks. Schaefer confirmed that he only had two dinners this week for Islanders and Sharks.
If the Islander passes him, the Sharks will be second overall. The question to consider now is whether the Islanders will consider players as the best player in the draft? Then, if they do, can an industry that allows islanders to accumulate a much-needed draft capital?
If overall finishing first, Schaefer will be the first OHL player since Otters Alum Connor McDavid’s first No. 1 in 2015.
Schaefer’s personality shines
Anyone who knows Schaefer knows that his character is easily seen. He immediately showed it to the rally media on Friday afternoon.
“What happened today? How is everyone doing,” Schaefer said with a smile. Later, he was asked what his favorite part of the group dinner was. It directly exerts his personality.
“I’m a talker. I love all these interviews and stuff. It keeps me busy. I love meeting new people. I go to eat islanders with the islanders on Monday and I go out for dinner with San Jose on Wednesday. Two great organizations. Super organization. Super easy. Meet them in the week. Very easy to get out. Go out with them.
Jim Waters
Schaefer’s journey has been well documented. In addition to losing mother and billet mother, Erie Otters’ boss Jim Waters has passed away.
From the moment Otters generally first drafted Schaefer, Mr. Waters was doing his thing, making him feel comfortable every step of the way. He thought Watt looked at him from above now.

“I was selected as Erie’s first year and they were very special to me,” Schaefer said. “Meet Jim Waters and Sheila Waters and they welcomed me right away. My parents felt so good that I left me two and a half hours away from home, I lived at home for the first time, played hockey at home, and left home. Their transition to me became easier. I miss Jim so much, but I knew he was looking down on me.”
Schaefer plans to have a fitness test at 10:30 AM Eastern on Saturday morning. It is very likely that he will wear islander or shark uniforms in the near future.
