Joey Barton convicted of assaulting his wife

Joey Barton was sentenced to a 12-week moratorium in Westminster District Court after being found guilty of assaulting his wife in June 2021.

The 42-year-old former football player was convicted of assaulting his wife, Georgia Barton, after drinking at night with two other couples.

Mrs. Patton, 38, had a lump on her forehead and had a bloody nose due to a dispute, according to the court lawsuit.

After the incident, Mrs. Barton called the police and said her husband “just hit me.” However, she later submitted a letter to the prosecutor in an attempt to withdraw her charges.

Still, Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring saw Barton’s version of the incident as “ambiguity” and eventually found out that he was convicted of assault after a two-day trial.

Prosecutors also believe that Mrs. Patton’s intoxication was not as intoxicated as she and her husband suggested. Ms Duong noted that her bloody nose was “a kind of harm that really needed explanation,” adding: “It was obvious that it was not caused by the accident.”

During the trial, Patton admitted that he had argued with his wife but denied any physical dispute. On the night of the incident, he fell asleep in their bedroom while police arrested him still intoxicated.

At the police station, he remained silent during the inquiry and conducted an unconditional interview.

His defense attorney Simon Csoka questioned the timing of the incident, indicating uncertainty about when Mrs. Patton was injured before the emergency call.

He said on a lump on her forehead, “In many cases, it may be accidentally injured.”

Patton wore a black coat, jumpers, pants and glasses in the courtroom, and did not speak at the dock, but was instructed to stand when the verdict was announced.

Despite the conviction, Patton and his wife were still married and shared the two children.
