Will the Pittsburgh Penguins hunt the big name UFA this offseason? Can they provide someone?
Dan Kingerski of Pittsburgh Hockey:(Mailbag) If the Pittsburgh Penguins can flip draft picks for some good young players, then maybe they can convince a big name free agent (like Mitch Marner) to sign in the offseason. It’s not easy for young players to sell a draft pick and lure a top free agent.
Buffalo Sabers JJ Peterka may be the main quotation target for Penguin. The Penguins won’t look for top RFAs to provide worksheets, as their 2026 first-round picks may be valuable. Last year’s figures ranged from a second round of compensation choice between $2.29 and $4.58 million. The numbers will be higher this year.
I believe that in the offseason, only the 2026 first-round draft pick will be sold low. GM Kyle Dubas may have been searching for up to three assets for Rakell during the trade deadline.

Houston expansion team appears
Emily Kaplan by ESPN: Sources say US billionaire Dan Friedkin will be a strong ownership candidate if the NHL expands to Houston.
Fredkin Group has been extended with the NHL. The group was purchased in 2020 with Roma in Italy’s Serie A and Everton in the 2024 British Premier League.
Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta also spoke with the NHL, but the Freidkin group appears to be ahead of Fertitta.
If/when the NHL expands, they might want to announce two teams. Atlanta seems to be a strong candidate. Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry said on social media that he had a “extremely productive call” with the NHL. New Orleans has some interest.
NHL Rumors: Toronto Maple Leaf, Philadelphia Flyer, Anaheim Ducks and Carolina Hurricane
Allan Walsh: “As I said several times in recent times, the NHL will have 2 new expansion teams. The new franchise in Houston and Atlanta are expected to pay $1.5 billion in expansion fees respectively.”
