Are you the kind of golfer who wraps your entire identity in a driver? Do you buy a new driver instead of taking classes? If so, you are not alone. Golfers love their drivers, believe it or not, you can tell a lot of people about the game by just looking at what’s in your schoolbag.
The golfer who swings taylormade has a completely different signal than the one who appears in the cobra. This is the message the driver sends to other golfers, whether you intend or not.
You’re you swaying
If you’re swaying Titleist or Taylormade Driver, you are either a solid golfer or desperate to think you are. These are quality drivers designed for players who value precision and control, and although they do have some forgiving options, they usually cater to lower barriers.
Taylormade drivers are especially screaming cutting-edge technology, but they are also expensive. If you have one in your bag, it says you’re willing to invest in the game, or you just like to have the latest and greatest gear, whether it actually helps you or not.
Caraway Players are a fun bunch. You might be a great golfer or a complete beginner, and your driver doesn’t necessarily give it up. That is, unless you are waving a Big Bertha, it is a dead giveaway, you are a high-level obstacle looking for the greatest forgiveness.
Of course, Callaway made some high-performance models, but the brand also catered to the weekend Warriors, who just wanted to bring the ball into the air without much trouble. If you are using a rogue or paradise, you might be a solid ball shooter who enjoys a fusion of forgiveness and balance of power.
But if you’re still swaying that big Big Bertha in 2004, we already know what your game looks like.
What about those swaying people ping? Ping drivers have developed over the years. Originally a game improvement brand product has matured into a legitimate competitor to golfers of all skill levels. Despite this, Ping players still have a certain reputation. Consider the Ping G430 driver. It has distance, forgiveness and a good look, just like the rest of the line, and doesn’t seem to mind being out of the crowd.
Unlike Taylormade or Titleist, Ping drivers aren’t always related to elite players, but they do do well. They may lack the operability of Titleist TSI or Stealth 2, but if you see someone with ping in their schoolbag, they may just be a solid golfer who cares more about performance than hype.
cobra Golfers face their demons. Those demons usually involve evil slices. Before Bryson DeChambeau and Rickie Fowler started pushing Cobra into the mainstream, the only reason to own Kings Cobra driver was because you love Greg Norman.
Today, Cobra is one of the best options for mid-range racers who need some extra help on the tee. If you have a Cobra driver, you may transition – start with a beginner combo and work hard to fix the swing. You may still leak some drives, but on a great day, this is controllable.
If your driver matches your ironthen you may buy a complete set right away. Very good – we all start somewhere. But, honestly: when you take a good course with a full beginner suit, people assume you don’t know your etiquette yet.
That’s not a bad thing, it’s just that you know that golf is more than just crushing the drive. If your driver is not on this list, you will most likely receive a gift from someone who doesn’t know about golf. Mizuno, pxg, miura or honma in your bag may look weird, but more often, it is more suitable for performance than performance.
Yes, Mizuno produces amazing irons, and yes, the PXG is all about quality technology, but when it comes to drivers, most golfers are big names that stick to for some reason. If you have a lesser-known driver brand, you either know something that the rest of us don’t know or you just want to be different.
Ultimately, it doesn’t matter what drivers you will play with as long as you like it. Whether you’re waving the brand new Titleist TSR3 or the Big Bertha that stands out by hand, Golf is about having fun and improving the game.
That said, your driver does say something to you – whether you like it or not. So, next time you stand on the first tee, look at the other bags around. Before they even swing, you may learn more about your gaming buddies than you think.
